I'm extremely worried I'll be put at a disadvantage at the top schools for having few to none ECs in the STEM area because I'm planning on majoring in Chem. Engineering.

Don't get me wrong, I am extremely involved with my school's ECs, but the ECs that I am extremely invested in are all political based (i.e. Model UN and Young Progressives). But I happen to be in 0 science clubs-- clubs at my school like Science Olympiad are all test-based, I want something where I am doing something hands-on.

Anyways, what I'm asking is that when a top Ivy or something is looking at my resume and comparing me to someone with similar stats that also wants to go into STEM, will I be at a disadvantage because it seems like I don't have passion for chemeng?

I'm reading everywhere that colleges love passion, and I do have passion for chem eng. I'm worried that the colleges won't see it as well because of my ECs.

Thanks for the help

I don’t think you would be in a disadvantageous position due to your EC’s. At least you are extremely involved in the EC’s you were in. If anything, I would think it shows that you’re a student with diverse passions. You clearly are into politics. That’s something unique and different. I don’t think they’ll hold it against you because you don’t have science EC’s. I’m sure they see thousands of predictable students who want to go into STEM fields and have all STEM EC’s.

Not saying there’s anything wrong with that but it doesn’t show any diversity. I want to go into a STEM field (pharmacy) and don’t have many STEM EC’s (only one). I’m more involved with athletics and volunteer work. The point is, I think the colleges will appreciate your EC’s for what they are and how you were involved with them.

@TheDidactic Oh that makes me feel a lot better now. Thanks

No problem! I wish you the best of luck with everything.

Perhaps you can look for a common thread between politics and engineering. They are both arenas that can be used to better society.
