So I just received my acceptance packet today (!!!) and one of the things in the folder was an invitation to the Science/Technology/Engineering/Math program. Here is the opening sentence:

“Please join us on Tuesday, April 21, 2009 for an invitation only program for admitted students with exceptional academic ability and demonstrated interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM).”

I am trying to figure out what the STEM program actually is. At any other college (i.e. not someplace as amazing as Brown) I would take the phrase “admitted students with exceptional academic ability” to mean that only a select few were invited. However, everyone that is accepted to Brown has exceptional academic ability. Is this program for all prospective students interested in science, technology, engineering and math, or is it something special? I only ask because my mom and I are trying to figure out when I should visit, and if it is something really special then I will do anything to get down to Providence the 21st. Thank you! :)

STEM is basically a program for students that have identified an interest in these areas (in years past, I think everyone who marked it off was invited, but with the explosion of popularity I wouldn’t be surprised if they’ve limited it slightly).

It’s extremely useful, IMO, having both attended the first year it was offered and subsequently helping the Chemistry department during STEM. You essentially get to spend some time at two departments hearing from the chair, some faculty, and some current students about their research and academic experience and talk about what its like to be a scientist in this field at Brown. You’ll get to see examples of student research and get to interact with a bunch of people with different perspectives on the sciences at Brown and it’s definitely chock full of great information.

I actually met some of my current friends at Brown at STEM 4 years ago…
