I am happy to have been admitted for the Fall 2011
But my acceptance is conditional upon attending the Summer STEP program, where I am to take one writing class and one other gen. curriculum class at the exchange of these courses counting towards the Fall, and given housing and board at their expense. I am really considering this opportunities, but, did anybody else get this offer? Has anyone done it in the past? How was your experience? Where is the housing, in or off campus? Thanks

Anyone??? Or do they just wanna give me room and board because they like me, lol?

I didnt do the step program, but i have friends who did do it. You live on campus in the dorms. you dont necessarily live in the dorm you will live in for the year but you do live in the dorms. i know the people who did it really enjoyed it, i dont even think they minded being away from home the whole summer because it was such a cool experience. from what i understand its for students who are first generation college students…i think? but i cant remember. they did have to do a class or 2, but it helped them get a few credits out of the way, get to know the campus and get used to living in dorms and they loved exploring dc. and dont worry the dorms have air conditioning!

ciarq, thanks for your input. I am really considering that option, I feel it is a great opportunity to get used to DC before the Fall. I am not 1st generation, but I am multicultural, and I think this is why I was given this chance. It is really nice of American to see the potential in a student that may need a “push” to get ready for college, not many schools do that!

Hello there, I was also accepted to the STEP Program. The STEP Program is for multicultural students, first generation students etc. This program was created to give a helping hand to first-generation etc. students to help them in the transition. I am a first-generation and a minority ( Colombian). I will be attending the program, (the flights to Washington D.C. are expensive). So what will you be majoring in?

colormaker,
The STEP program sounds like such a good opportunity. It’s a good, less-stress way of getting into the swim of college-level academics…a light course load and a chance to hone research and writing skills. The student body at AU is very competitive and motivated (not in a cut throat way but in a way that every student wants to achieve at their best level) and this is a great way of ensuring that you have the skills you need to be successful academically.

I wish it were offered as an option for all students.
