Is anyone else signing up for STEP?

If so, do you know when we hear from them after we’ve submitted our SIR and step program questionaire?

If so, do you know when we hear from them after we’ve submitted our SIR and step program questionaire?

Nevermind about when you hear XD.

It's mid march =]

May********

Hey hey! I am a former STEP-student and can answer any of your questions regarding this program.. let me know if you have any! =)

What is step?

STEP is an orientation alternative in which you have to be invited to attend. Being invited doesn't mean that you'll automatically be accepted into the program. It's basically college prep for a month before fall quarter starts. The program is all about diversity.. meaning you'll never see so many minorities grouped together once STEP is over. It's a very easy one-month program and if you get financial aid, the program fee is waived.

Perks of going to STEP:
You'll be in Davis for a whole month before everyone else, allowing you to watch the first football game =P
You get to live in Segundo North, so if you don't get it for regular school, at least you've experienced the new dorms =)
If you get financial aid, the whole program is waived, which = 3 meals at the DC / day.
FIRST-PRIORITY CLASS REGISTRATION FOR 2 YEARS. <---- This has got to be the best incentive to go to STEP. You'll never have to worry about not getting your classes because you have the same priority as athletes do!!
No lines whatsoever... the bookstore is very empty, so you can buy your fall quarter books with ease.
You can bring your bike up, and leave it there for fall quarter to begin =D
The STEP director monitors your grades for two years, and will call you in for a meeting if you get a C- or lower, or have less than a 2.0 GPA. They really want you to succeed and want to plan your next quarter's schedule so you don't wind up getting kicked out.

Some cons to STEP
You lose a month of your summer
The people in charge of STEP love to say that you make your best friends during here.. I definitely do not agree to that. In fact, I barely talk to anyone from STEP anymore
The first week of STEP is PAINFUL. The whole day is dedicated to orientation lectures and activities... NOT FUN!
STEP is a bit too easy.. it doesn't feel like I've learned much during STEP, other than learning how to critically analyze essays.

This is what comes to my mind so far.. I'm sure I'll have more to say once I think about it =P

My brothers gf did Step. I filled out my questionaire when i first got my acceptance to UCD. I dont even know what i put. LOL.

So do you think that overall it was a good program?

Wait so if you get financial aid the program is waived? How much financial aid do you have to get?

Overall it was a good program. Oh, I forgot to mention that you were allowed to get a free game of bowling every day with the guest pass you received. One word of warning is that it's REALLY hot. But the campus is really beautiful when it's so sunny. The first-priority registration is what makes this program worth it by tenfolds

They don't specify how much financial aid you need to have in order to waive the program's fee, so I'm guessing it's on a case-by-case basis. If your EFC is around 4000 or less, they'll probably waive the fee.

I kinda want to do it, but I don't want to lose a month of my last summer. How often do classes fill? I mean will I be able to get a class like Calculus? Or Econ if I'm undeclared?

Freshmen are given the last priority when it comes to registering for classes. Chances are you'll probably have to waitlist into the class or you'll get a crappy discussion time that doesn't fit well with your schedule. To put it in perspective..
I'm taking NUT 010 (Nutrition Discovery & Concepts). I have first priority, a whole week ahead of other freshmen.
There are 550 spots for the class. By the end of the first day, it was down to 450. After the seniors and juniors registered, it was down to about 220. The sophomores pretty much took the last 220 spots, so anyone who wanted to take NUT 10 would have to waitlist after that.

It's not the end of the world if you have to waitlist a class. Usually, if you're near the top of the waitlist, you'll get in, but it feels great knowing you get first dibs on all the classes you want with the ability to make your schedule perfect =]

if i get to opportunity to do STEP, i'm taking it.

What if I'm EOP? My couselor said that EOP students get priority too. I think this may only apply to CSUs though.

Are you EOP at Davis?

It's really odd. Some EOP students DO get priority, but the majority that I know of don't. I only know of one friend in EOP who didn't attend STEP that has priority over class registration.

I have EOP at Davis. Hopefully that helps me get into STEP?

LOL.

I want to do STEP. Unfortunately, I can't afford it. =/

I have EOP. lol but I don't even know what that gets me. Or well I don't know if I have EOP. Everyone just told me that I would get it.

Go to your account and click on EOP. it should tell you xD

Well it says

"The mission of EOP is to provide you with the support and services you need to continue your success at UC Davis, which includes orientation programs, academic advising, peer counseling and supplemental instruction"

At least that's what I have. But it doesn't say anything about priority in classes.
