I'm lookin to apply to a private school and have to submit the FAFSA for finAid.

With my younger siblings (both 11y.o.), we are 5 pers. in our household. My mother's yearly income is about $22'000 however my stepfather's income comes yearly higher than $100'000 but he's NOT going to contribute any of my school expenses.

Is there any way to let them know that only my mother, as legal guardian, is going to help me out with financing or will this high sum decrease my chances to get any finAid?

When your moms boyfriend married her, he made a decision to become part of your family.
His income will count towards available money for your college expenses.
If you apply to private school that often use the PROFILE to look at assets, then the non custodial parents income will be evaluated as well.

It won’t matter to the schools. The family income includes your SF’s income. You will have a very high EFC. The schools aren’t going to disregard your SF’s income.

While he may not be contributing directly to your school expenses, indirectly he is. Your mom only earns $22k. She couldn’t likely give you a dime if she wasn’t living on her H’s salary as well. Her H is largely paying for housing, food, utilities etc…which means your mom has more money to give YOU.

Before you apply to a bunch of unaffordable schools, you need to run the NPCs on the websites to determine what your aid will be and whether your mom will pay it. You need to use the entire family income.

If your mom can’t pay the EFC (which likely will be around $40k per year), then you need to get smart and apply where you’ll get large merit scholarships that won’t consider income.

Think about…your household has $125k in income. Your EFC is going to be about $40k per year!!! Do you really think schools are going to pretend that your mom’s $22k income only counts???

Also…some privates will also include your DAD’s income…so that could make things even worse.

How much will your mom pay each year? If you don’t know, ask her. THAT IS important info. You need that info!!!

I think you need to look for many schools that will give you VERY LARGE merit scholarships for your stats.

Answer above is totally correct. Your stepfather’s income and assets will be counted. It makes no difference if he will contribute or not. Your aid will be calculated as if he will.

If you’re not a US citizen or a green card holder, then you can’t use FAFSA.

If you’re not a US citizen/green card, then you’re not going to get aid from most schools.

What schools are you considering? Are you being athletically recruited without a full scholarship???

Soccer is your sport. You need to discuss the situation with your schools that are recruiting you. You need to lay the cards on the table. You won’t qualify for the aid you need, so what can they do for you.
