Steps in Applying to UMKC

Is there anyone here who has gone through the entire application process for UMKC SOM? I think it would be really helpful if we could get a timeline and a checklist for everything that's required.

Hey chaz90,
I’m a year 1 this fall. So, here’s a basic timeline of the application process:
Now: Apply to the undergraduate school online. Check our umkc.edu and click on perspective students. You will find the application there.

Now-mid November: Apply to the school of medicine. The application is a paper app. It’s available online. I’d simply google it. It’s a PDF file. It requires an essay, 3 recommendations (they don’t have to be by teachers btw I got one from a doctor that I work w/ at a Family practice), a long thing about professionalism that you have to sign, official transcript, and the general application. They leave space for your essay on the application, but I’d recommend to type it and write “see attached”. That’s what I did.

December-January (Actually I think I found out earlier than this time frame. It all depends on when you apply to the undergrad program).: You will find out if you are accepted to the undergrad school first.

December-March: You will be called for an interview. If you think that you’re a good candidate and don’t get called by late January, early February just call to see their progress. UMKC is very unorganized. Many of my fellow year 1 students told me that they had to call to find out if they had an interview. In state applicants get called for interviews earlier than out of state applicants. I had my interview in early March w/ several other out of state kids. Remember that they had roughly 600 kids apply this year. They gave about 200 interviews and accepted about 150ish. Getting an interview is very crucial. We have 124 kids in my class ('13). We have 60 girls and 64 guys. There are several students from out of state, so don’t think you don’t have any chance. We have kids from California, Arizona, Iowa, Illinois, Maryland, New York, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Virginia, the list goes on.

When you get called for an interview, remember that they put a lot of weight on the interview process. They have basically weeded everyone out based on academics already. You must have a genuine interest in medicine and carry yourself in a professional manner. They look very closely at compassion, intellect and maturity. Remember that you will not be a traditional college student. You will be a medical student from your first day. They make a point to stress this fact.

First week of April: You will hear a decision. The best thing to be honest is to just call them up. I found out that way, and got my letter a week later.

Good luck w/ your application process everyone! I better get back to anatomy.

Thanks a ton.
