Stereotypes of each residential college

jym- No, I meant my friend. Ben (my friend) got into a 4 or 5 man room with some older guys in the new section... probably some guys he knew through baseball. I don't know how Ted faired in room draw this year.
I hadn't thought of the off campus housing like that, and that's a really good point! That was one of the things I was a little worried about when I visited this spring... but the surrounding area is so nice it really isn't that bad.

Kathryn-
Thanks for clarifying. Do not let the off campus housing thing bother you. Us nervous nelly moms were concerned, but as I said, it turned out to be a great experience for my s. (and I believe it turned out to be less expensive for us in the long run too-- that was a nice plus!). I think that the experience my s. gained by living off campus was a great learning experience. He was quite the entrepreneur when he advertised for and coordinated all the summer roommates he is currently living with (I believe there are 8 in the duplex and adjoining garage apt). Plus, by having one of the utilities in his name this past year, he's establishing credit. And he's met a bunch of great people this summer from all over the place that are living with him and doing various things in Houston this summer. I am quite proud of how he has grown, and credit some of it to living off campus.

I find it fascinating that at so many other schools students want to live off campus, but at Rice everybody wants to live on campus! That really says something for Rice.

Well, my mom is one of those "nervous nelly moms," but I don't think it's that bad at all. I love the way the residential college system works- I think that's part of the reason that everyone at Rice wants to live on campus. There seemed to be a lot of good apartment complexes around Rice too so it probably works out well.

D moved off campus last year as a junior and she loves it. She had gone to boarding school her last two years of high school, so she was really "dormed out". She has a wonderful aparment about a 1 1/2 miles from Rice. (she has a car). She has enjoyed it so much and loves the privacy and the ability to have dinner parties. She kept it through the summer, even though she isn't there, and will live in it senior year. By the time you have to face the off-campus issue, you and your parents will be comfortable with it. There are many good options.

lol - ted and i co-tourguided spring semester every monday and becky was one of the first people I met during owl weekend before I was a freshman - what a nice group of advisors some new freshmen are going to have!
