Stern Chances?

GPA: 89% unweighted (with an upward trend)

English--86%
Calculus I--96%
Modern Philosophy--88%
French--95%
Principles of Math and Logic--92%
Renaissance History--87%
Art History--90%

Courseload: Most difficult, 5/7 honours.

Class Rank: 8/70 students.

SAT I: 1420 (730v, 690m)...took it in grade 10, so I'll need to take the new one...shooting for over a 2200 (as essay-writing suits me well, and I've gotten much better at math).

SAT IIs: Haven't yet taken, but I'm hoping for around a 740 in literature and a 720 in Math IC (will taking IC hurt me??? Because I never learned vectors, yet I would hope a 96% in calculus would show that I can handle IIC).

ECs: Lots of writing stuff--HS newspaper (4 yrs.) editor, some freelancing work, literary journal editor (2 yrs.), quiz team (2 yrs.), guitar and bass (4 yrs.), band night organizer (1 yr.) and part-time job (2 yrs.).

Note that two of those ECs (editor of HS newspaper and Band Night Organizer) I was only eligible for one year.

Essays would be very good to excellent.
Recs would be good to very good.

Anyone...?

nyu weighs incredibly heavily on SAT scores, until you get those scores all predictions are meaningless, but as of now it looks like your gpa will be a little on the low side whereas your sat score will be above the average.

I wouldn't call my predictions meaningless. I know my abilities, and I've done practice tests.

I'm Canadian though--our GPAs are usually lower, as there's much less grade inflation here. Only the most gifted and hardest-working students get over a 94% average, and GPAs over 96% are almost impossible. For my class, the top GPA is about a 93%.

i meant predictions on your acceptance... but people are also notoriosly bad at predicting there sat scores... a 100 point difference between predicated and actual score can mean ALOT ( and this happens ALOT) people with 1350's this year are getting referred to GSP whereas 1450's are gettin fairly big scholarships....

Yeah, but considering a got a 1420 all the way back in grade 10, I can at least pull off like a 2140 this time around (especially since the new Writing/Essay section is the kind of stuff I'm really good at...so I can see myself with a 2200 with some studying).

About the SAT II's in math. I've heard from guidance counselors and college admissions people that if you have taken at least precalc, they want to see you take the IIC instead of IC. The IIC really isn't that bad, and I don't even remember vectors being on there. Just get a review book and check it out.

i did much better on IIC than IC, its all precalc or less

what about my stats? can you guys weigh in with your opinion?

asian male, texas
SAT 1: 1490 (730 math 760 verb)
SAT 2's: 780 writing, 630 lit, 680 math 1c
National Merit Finalist
GPA: 4.40 rank 60/800 (really competitive huge school)
9 ap classes, (4 senior year)
3 APUSH, 4 eng3, World Hist, 5 Psych

and my biggest one is a marketing firm internship senior year
good recs (one from the marketing exec)

i think whats a mark against me is a good number of b's through the years. especially a low b in pre-cal junior year. i still have a decent rank though.

what do you guys think?

i would really try to get the math 1c up or take the math 2c and get 700+--i think stern likes people to have good math skills

satI is decent, ecs are fine

apply ED and you'll have a good shot

dont let them get you down jpps1 just shoot for a good SAT, and i hope i see you there!

Math is important...he should def. be taking IIC and not IC.

But considering that I'm carrying such a high average in Cal I right now (96%), doesn't that more than make up for almost any math SAT, assuming I don't totally bomb them and get like a 600?

Uh... no. I had a 91% in Calc I but I got a 1 on the AP. Standardized test scores are most important because they are comparable to other students. The grade in the class is only useful to show how hard you can work; it can't really measure your intelligence.

BTW, I only got a 1 on the AP because my teacher sucked. I took Calc 1 in college and got an A. I'm taking Calc II now and I have an A. I also took Statistics and Contemporary Mathematics and got As in both. Anyway... the SAT score is more important.

What are the average SAT scores of NYU Stern acceptees?

last year it was 1412....i think someone posted that it went up to mid-1400s this year (not sure about their source though)
