Stern FAQ's

ACT, GPA, and class rank are competitive for Stern, but how about the depth of your EC’s and your essays?

I am applying for transfer.

I am applying for fall2011 transfer. And I’ve submit my commonapp and all my materials to nyu in mid-march. I haven’t heard anything from the admission till now. How can I track my application process?

My ecs are great, I’m very involved in the theater/chorus in my school. Well over 300 hours of theater related activities.

I’m going to be a stern freshmen next year and assuming I get 5’s on AP Macro, Micro, and BC Calc, what classes can I be placed in for freshmen year? What placements are the easiest in terms of doing well in class?

The AP policy indicates that there are few classes that you could skip out due to 4 or 5 in your APs. You can not exempt Calculus, but you can place on Calculus I, II, or III with a good score on Calculus BC. The only requirement that you can place out is the Natural Sciences requirement, giving you an extra elective.

Doing well or challenging yourself. If doing well is what you want, register and get an “A” on Calculus I. There will be future classes as part of your curriculum that will challenge your GPA.

I heard that NYU pampers Stern students with free stuff and added benefits, more so than the other schools, is that true?

@superexcited

Well I guess you could consider the amazing recruiting and easy access to banking jobs added benefits lol. There’s also very well known speakers that come often. Cory Booker, mayor of Newark, spoke a few weeks ago. Alan Greenspan, former chairman of the Federal Reserve, also came to speak. Gives you an idea as to who comes in and out of there .

Yeah, NYU has some great speakers and alum out there, I can’t wait for Biz and Publics next year to hear them :D

Some of the more material benefits are Stern’s very own WiFi network, another email address that we get to activate later in the summer, and free printing. Yay free printing!

Lol, why does Stern need it’s own wifi network? And I thought there was a 1500 sheet limit to the printing. Not sure.

Well having their own network just keeps the user base smaller to keep bandwidth use down. Printing used to be 3000 sheets a year, now its only 1500 :(. But yea there are a lot of great speakers and events to attend. As for free stuff, I am not sure how it compares to other schools. I guess what you are thinking of are the perks of going to Stern in general and that would most definitely touch internships. Being able to intern while going to school aids a large portion of students in building their resumes and networks for full-time recruitment.

Most kids think Stern is super mysterious and secretive, it’s kind of funny.

We have our own buildings, and if it weren’t for the fact that a couple CAS classes get taught in the UC and LC floors, almost no one not in Stern would even be in there. We have our own computer labs, and the non-Sternies who used to go in there can’t anymore because you need a Stern netID to log in. My one friend got SO heated about it last year, it was funny. If you’re not in Stern and you have a class in our building, you need to go through this drawn-out process of getting wireless activated on your laptop. We have our own (generous, or at least used to be) printing allowance, lounges, computing facilities, email address (only undergrad school to have an entirely separate network), endowment (this makes people so mad), and other stuff . . . people think we’re aloof elitists. It’s funny.

Does Paying 60k a year pay off? I would love to go to stern but I am afraid that the cost is going to make me bankrupt before I can get an MBA, would you suggest going to a cheaper school and stern for grad or will the job and experience pay for itself? btw I will not be receiving any need based aid and i am nothing spectacular for stern so no merit either. My parent will pay no more than 25k a year so I need to come up with 35K a year for all four (possibly six) years. Too much debt??

You won’t be looking for an MBA straight out of undergrad anyway. The cost is high, yes, but if you excel and get a decent job out of school, you could be paying that cost off in 2-4 years, at which point it’s more common to go for an MBA. And your earnings out of b-school will be even greater, so loans for that aren’t typically much of a concern especially since so many programs give aid.

Just updating the source from 2007 stats to 2010 stats for this thread

What’s more prestigious: Stern core business or Stern BPE?

Let’s say for someone who wants to get into a Wall Street-like career?

wow this is very helpful, thank you!

is this thread still running? It would be really helpful if the Sternies would be active and help out some of the applicants :(

Well seeing as the last post was 3 years ago… no.
