Stern Freshman Willing to Answer Questions!

Hey guys sorry I haven’t been answering lately! Exam week is always tough =/ Anyway, o continue answering:

@mmarsh
I’m glad you’re deciding to get serious about college! i see so many people wasting this opportunity by partying and not going to class and just not taking anything seriously, so I wish you good luck! As for transfers, I’m sorry I really can’t help you with that. I don’t know of anyone transferring right now. You should give them a call though, or since you say you’re already at NYU you should definitely talk to a counselor about this. Again, I’m sorry I can’t help you anymore. Best of luck!

@vigilant111
don’t be afraid to apply directly to Stern. You will regret it later on, and internal transfers are extremely difficult. Based on your stats, I would say you have a good shot at Stern. Work hard on your essays and supplements! Good luck!

I already applied ED to Stern. This may be a little personal but you said I can ask you anything so :P. How much do you pay per year, how much grant money did they give you? How would you describe your family’s income and assets (low, high)? Thanks.

@Noldi
Good luck with applications! Well to be honest I got no financial aid when I applied, because my family earns about 150,000. I was honestly kind of surprised when I got no financial aid, I thought I at least qualified for some. Unfortunately what you’ll hear from a lot of people, including me, is that nyu is really crappy with financial aid, not at all generous. so good luck with apps and even more luck with financial aid :)

Well my family makes about 30k/yr. Hopefully the max grant of 25k? D:

Hey Jen!

I’m really worried that my low SAT scores will take away the chance of me getting into NYU Stern so I really need your advice.

Well, firstly I’m from Cyprus, my first language is greek and that’s why I had trouble with the SAT reading. The rest of my application however, is pretty impressive
-GPA 3.8
-Excellent teacher and headmistress reccomendations (they love me ;p)
-Work experience in my dad’s cinemas in NYC - Cinema Village being one of them if you happen to know it, since ur like 1 block away ;p

  • My EC are excellent as well- one of the most significant ones are- selected as Chairperson of the Meditterenean Model United Nations; 3rd place in national public speaking competition; Pro Volleyball; School council and school prefect and many more
  • In my essay i talk about living in the states and cyprus at once (title ‘When the two worlds collide’ - since I’ve always been travelling back and forth- then how i want to take my father’s business to the next level
  • Applying ED II
    -A-Level Maths B, IGCSE engl as a second language A* (100%), IGCSE Lit B,
    -High level courses at school (Economics (92%), Accounting (96%))

So what do you think? chances?
Also, is there anything else i can do to enhance my chances of getting in?

@katenic

well first of all what exactly is your SAT score? I can’t fairly assess you without knowing what we’re talking about here. Otherwise, all your credentials look really great. And at this point I’m not sure there’s anything left for you to do. I wish you the best of luck!

Hi Jen! what do you think my chances are of NYU Stern ED1?

hmm… might be missing some more but these are my main ones. I hope that my internship with credit suisse will help

Teacher recs: should be good, got it from my econ and lang teacher and my lang teacher said I was one of the best students in her class
Counselor Recs: probably generic but shouldn’t be detrimental
essays: i think they aren’t bad, got some feedback and many of them said they were really good but I’ll leave that up to admissions officers

I’ll post more info if I think of any. Please feedback me! I really wanna get into Stern I have a burning passion for finance and I hope that shows through my EC’s. December 15th is coming so soon!

My SATs are a horrible…talking about 1700-1800 (CR, M and W) and I can’t take the test again coz NYU deadline is Jan 1. I didnt realise how important SATs were for the admission. What would you do in this situation?

Thanks!:D

@fdsjaif
I think your credentials look fantastic! And the fact that you applied ED can only help :slight_smile: I think you’ve got a great shot, good luck! 10 more days!

@katenic
To be honest with you your scores are really low, especially if you’re applying to Stern. Maybe the strength of your other credentials will help them overlook your low scores, but I really can’t say for sure. There’s nothing to do about it anymore, just wait it out and hope for the best. good luck!

ok! thanks for all the help!!!

Hi Jen,

What is the policy on CAS students taking stern courses? Specifically, I want to take some courses requiring 2311 Foundations of Finance (a core course which I heard CAS students aren’t allowed to take). Would I be able to take that course and then other elective finance courses with a business studies minor?

What if I am a transfer student and have the exact same course (material-wise) from a different 4 year university business program already? Can equivalent Stern courses be applied from transfer students?

Thanks!

Hi Jen :)

This might be a silly question, but what is the title of NYU’s ED1 admission decision email?
If like the title was Congrats! for people who were accepted and Sorry for rejections I would be tooo scared to open my email box…

@collegeAC

I actually have friend who’s in CAS right now but taking Stern classes, so I know a little about this. As far as I know, CAS are allowed to take all Stern courses. I don’t know why you wouldn’t be allowed to take 2311 foundations of finance. Maybe you haven’t satisfied some prereq? I’d suggest checking with your advisor. From personal experience I can tell you that Stern is not big on transfer. They’re very strict about it for some reason…maybe to make more money. I don’t know how well it would work for you, which is why (again) I’d suggest you speak to your advisor about this. Hope I helped!

@THEHORDE
Haha I was exactly in this position last year, with the email coming within days. They definitely won’t write your application status in the subject of the email. You won’t just magically open your email and see an email called congrats/sorry. What they will do is send an email from admissions.ops@nyu.edu, and the subject line will simply say “your nyu admissions decision” you have to open the email to actually see if you got in. good luck!

If you have the time to chance me I would appreciate it

White Male Illinois, applying regular decision

Grades: 4.60 weighted, 3.93-3.95 unweighted. I’ve taken almost all honors/ap classes since freshman year and I’ve gotten 2 B’s overall; one in in freshman year in enriched chem, the other last year in AP Lang. I will probably have 1-2 B’s first semester senior year. My school doesnt rank but if it did I would be 10-15/800

Scores: 35 on ACT, 2260 sat 800math 760reading 700 writing. 800/790/770 on SATII for math II, Chem and Us History. I’ve gotten 5’s on all AP tests including Econ Macro/micro, Chemistry, BC Calc, Us History, English Lang, and Us Gov.

Extra-Curricular: President of my schools investment club, math team 3 years (on a few state winning teams), 2 years on debate (a lot of placements in tournaments), Played violin for 12 years including 4 years in local youth orchestras, 4 years of lacrosse (3 on varsity), my team of four placed 2nd at the National Personal Finance Competition and we also won the state competition, national honors society and Spanish honors society, Illinois Youth and Government for 2 years (

Senior year schedule: AP art history, AP Lit, AP bio, AP euro, AP psych, and Multivariable calculus.

Assume standard essays/ referee’s

thanks jen!

I was also wondering, I’ve heard so many ruomrs about Stern being super super competitive and that’s kind of worrying me now. Could you explain why people say that and is it as true as some people sy?

@j3wfro

your gpa, ACT/SAT, and AP scores look fantastic! so that’s definitely a plus. and your ecs are really good. the only thing I would say is, since you said you’re applying reg decision, and the deadline isn’t here (as far as I remember?) is to put some more work into your essay. I don’t know what it’s like now, but you say it’s pretty standard so if I were you I would look at it again, have someone edit it. Nobody really thinks the essay is that important, but when you have a lot of highly qualified candidates applying for admission, it can often be the deciding factor. best of luck!

@fdsjaif
I’ve heard this so many times it’s ridiculous. I have to say that, as a freshman, I haven’t gotten into the full competitiveness of the school just yet. I expect it later when I try to find jobs, and especially during recruiting (which you will learn about later). However, that doesn’t mean I can’t address your concerns right now. The problem with Stern (in my opinion, people will no doubt say differently) is how much everyone is unwilling to help. It’s the environment really. Don’t expect people to help you out with homework or anything like that. This isn’t the school for that. And it’s because of the curve I guess. Everyone’s competing for that top grade, so everyone is unwilling to give their competitors an edge. It sucks but that’s the way Stern is. I wouldn’t worry if I were you. Just study hard and do your work and you’ll be good.

Jen

Thank you so much for doing this. I want to apply to stern. I am interested in Economics and Business. I want to either double major or if I get into Stern then minor in Econ?

How is it that you are in stern and majoring in Econ and Stat. Don’t you have to be in CAS - Dept of Econ to major in Econ.

My UW - is 3.5 and SAT is 2030. 2 APs junior year - both A’s. 3 APs this year - Spanish (likely A), Econ - love the subject - but maybe B/C, Stat - love the subject - but maybe B/C. Good Recs, Pretty good ECs, V. good essays - I think.
What are my chances at Stern?

SHould I just apply to CAS - Econ - to increase my chances - major in Econ - but take some courses from Stern.

You seem to say in your earlier posts that it is easy to double major. If I am in CAS - Econ - can one of my majors be Business/Finance?

Thank you again.

@amghspa

Not necessarily. You can major in econ in one of two ways: through the cas econ department or directly through stern. Stern isn’t only for business concentrations. They also have accounting, actuarial science, finance, stats, international business, marketing, econ, etc.

Based on your stats I’d have to honestly say you’d be better off applying to cas and majoring in econ. or gpa is a bit low for stern. Your SAT scores could also be a little higher. What were your AP scores for the exams you’ve taken? And do you have any SAT II scores? post more of your scores so I can more accurately tell you

I have a friend who’s actually doing that right now. She’s in CAS, majoring in econ, and taking a bunch of classes at Stern. So either way you’d be well off.

It is very easy to double major at Stern. In fact, I haven’t met one person here that DOESN’T double major. That’s because each major has so few credit requirements that you could easily do a double major, or one major double minor, or one major one minor. There’s a lot of variation for what you can do. I don’t know much about double majoring through CAS. I’m sure it can be done, but I don’t know the details or how you’d go about it. I only know of double majoring through Stern. It’d be best for you to speak to an advisor about this.

Good luck!

I heard that Stern has more and more Asian students especially Chinese last year. From your first hand experience and from your classes. What are the % of Chinese"? Over 20% or over 40% or close or more than half? If latter is the case, do you see or have you heard of any complaint from other races? I also heard that Stern is race-blind in its admission process compared to other Ivy who claim/execute race diversity. Do you know if it is true?

@njparent123
Not to offend anybody but there are definitely a lot of asians. Conservatively speaking, I’d say about 65% of the student body is Asian. You always hear the standard jokes about it, I’m sure you know what I mean. I won’t say anything more about that. I don’t know if Stern is really race-blind. Judging from the percentage of Asian students, I’d have to say yes. But that’s only in Stern. The percentage is significantly lower in all the other schools of NYU.
