I just want to know my chances for STERN

International Student but American Citizen

GPA. 3.55 UW
Courses: 3 IB High Level, 4 IB Standard Level
SAT 1: 2110
SAT 2: Math 1: 720, Chinese: 790

What are my chances for STERN ED II?

HI! How are international students view there? Coming from a hard school with a 3.5 GPA (3 AP, 1 honors, 2 normal classes) Planning on getting 2000+ SAT and 30+ ACT. Many after schools like Model United Nations, Class President, soccer team for 4 years, Softball team for 3 years, Basketball year for 2 years, community service leader, etc.
Hows like there also?
Thanks!

@studyboy
Your GPA is a bit low for Stern. They average around a 3.7. Also what are you scores on the IB exams you’ve taken? SAT scores look pretty good, I assume your ecs are good as well. I’d have to say it’s possible, but you should also apply to backups as well. Good luck!

@thinkingguys
I know there are a lot of international students are Stern, I’ve met quite a few. It’s actually pretty common. Your GPA is a bit low for Stern, and 3 AP classes is also pretty low. Are you a junior or a senior? If you’re a junior you still have time to fix all of that, but if you’re a senior then I really wouldn’t go for Stern, sorry to tell you. Also the fact that you’re planning to get those scores means nothing right now. I need to see real stats, not planned ones. Post back when you have solid stats.

Hi Jen =),
I really want you to chance me, but I’m not sure if you are familiar with the IB system? If you are, what do you think is a must-have minimium score to apply to stern? I had 38/42 2nd semester of junior year but I dropped to 36/42 this semester… but my predicted should still me around 38 to 39/42. What do you think?
thanks!

Hello Jen!
Can you also tell me what my chances are for Stern? I’m most likely doing EDII, but I’m actually just a bit unsure about that. What would my chances be for RD?

Anyway, here are my stats:

GPA: 4.33 weighted, 3.74 UW

ACT: 35 (36/English, 35/math, 35/reading, 32/science, 10/writing)

SAT II: 770 math ii, 790 Chinese, unknown for physics (it’s coming out in a week)

APs: 5s in AP Calc BC, APUSH, and Lang Comp, 3 in AP Physics B, but not reporting that…
Currently taking AP Physics C, AP Lit Comp, AP Comp sci, AP French, AP Prob stat

ECs: On the Forensics speech and debate team, won several awards and 1 at state level for speech, I am the fundraising chair/treasurer
FBLA webmaster, went to nationals last year for business ethics, placed 1st at states
created my own creative writing club freshman year, in several honor societies, officer in two other fundraising clubs since sophomore year.

Thanks! :)

Are you happy at Stern? Though there isn’t exactly a campus, do you feel that students feel identified with Stern/NYU or that everyone feels like more or less an individual getting ahead by their own account through NYU’s means? Cause that’s what I’ve heard; that the college experience, living in NYC, particularly at NYU, is very limited and that a lot of people at unhappy at NYU mostly because of its atmosphere and lack of spirit.

@IheartPW
Well I have to say that unfortunately I know very little about the IB system. I don’t personally know that many international students. However, from what I know I think a 38-39/42 would be an A- (forgive me if I’m wrong). and this would be equivalent to a 3.7 I think which puts you right there with most applicants, so your chances would be pretty good. However, really try for that 38-39/42 because a 36/42 is somewhat low. Good luck!

@leshiney
Well your chafes for EDII and regular decision would both be really good. The problem with EDII is you have to attend if you are accepted, so before you apply to either I would advise you to think long and hard about Stern and if it’s really the one you want. Don’t apply to EDII just because you think t will give you an edge. But your stats are great, so they would work for either. Best of luck!

You’ll hear this over and over again. NYU is not like any other school. it’s good in some ways, it’s also bad in others. From my personal experience I don’t feel that connected to the school. To me it’s not even really college, it’s just several buildings put together and called a college. I think the fact that we don’t have a campus definitely contributes to this. You don’t feel as connected as you would at any other school. And that really goes for NYU in general I’d have to say, not just Stern. With Stern, I feel like the fact that we’re all in the business field has more to do with the individuality than not having a campus. You’re all competing for those few tough jobs and best grades, and the attitude is mostly to help yourself and not worry about others. It works for some people, it doesn’t work for others. People are friendly when it comes to things outside of school. You need help in school, I’m sorry to say you can forget it. people are very reluctant to help when it comes to homework and studying. It’s just the atmosphere unfortunately. Ultimately, it comes down to what works for you. For me, I like it this way because I’ve never been very social in high school, so I’m glad to end up at a school where I can focus on myself. It might not work for you. It’s not the school for anyone. If you like the traditional college experience (not that there’s anything wrong with that), then I don’t suggest applying to Stern. You wouldn’t like it. I’d be happy to answer any other questions you might have about this.

Hi Jen! Thanks for the feedback!

The only reason I was a bit uncertain about EDII is that I want to see what my chances are for the Ivies. However, after doing some more research, I’ve come to really like NYU Stern, and in my opinion, it’s better than some Ivies because of its location and curriculum. In fact, its location is amazing. The only downside is that it doesn’t “sound as good” as an Ivy…but at this point, I don’t care about that anymore. So yeah, definitely doing EDII. :D

One last question, will you be willing to look at my NYU supps after I’m done with them? I’m taking a bit of a risk…though I don’t know if it’s an appropriate one. Thanks!!! :)

@leshiney
I’m glad you’ve decided! best of luck! maybe i’ll be seeing you around campus next year :slight_smile:
yes not a problem! just pm with them whenever you’re done.

Thanks, that answer was really helpful

I’m a sophomore in high school. My cumulative GPA is about a 3.7 at the moment, but I got a C last year, my (unweighted) GPA this year so far is about a 3.9, and I don’t see that going down so by the end of high school I should have about a 3.85-3.9 or so, and I take all honors classes. I was in Knowledge Bowl last year, but my school this year doesn’t have that so I can’t join, and I’m not currently in any clubs, but I plan on being in Ping Pong Club when it starts, (Yes, amateur, I know, but it’s really fun) and Future Business Leaders of America (As soon as they have an opening I’m joining), and NHS. I took the PSAT this year, in October, so basically as a freshman, and I got a 1560. I’m expecting this to be about at least 1800-2000 by senior year. I don’t have any community service either, but I will be starting this summer with some friends, with about 30 hours. What do you think my chances are if everything goes like I mentioned?

Hi I goto CAS Econ and I was wondering about the transfer chances

So I have

Micro Econ A-

Macro Econ A-

International Writing Workshop A

Calculus B+

GPA: 3.7

…

Why would you want to transfer out of CAS Econ? CAS has just as many, if not more renown econ faculty as Stern. CAS Econ is one of the best of its type in the world. You have no disadvantage doing Econ from CAS vs. Stern.

This may sound/is going to sound very hypocritical

but getting a job is the most important thing I want to achieve after graduation and Stern almost guarantees it…

Nothing is guaranteed - I dislike that attitude that I’ve seen so far in Stern - but yes, it is much easier to get a finance job from Stern. CAS Econ is different from Stern in terms of job prospects; it’s shallow, but name really does carry weight around here. CAS Econ kids do get great jobs, but for them it takes more effort; there are just so many opportunities thrown at the Stern kids, it’s incredible.

It’ll be even better for the kids in your year, 2015, than for the 2013 kids going through recruiting right now. Terrible hiring environment, this is the worst pessimism I’ve seen on the Street since the crisis.

@kbecker
Your gap’s great but your expected SAT score is (to be honest), on the lower end for Stern. Aim higher, and study hard! I would they to get AT LEAST a 2100. Especially because you say you don’t have a lot of ecs, so your grades have to be amazing to make up for that. What AP classes are you taking? You definitely need to get a head start on those if you haven’t studied already. All applicants to Stern have high grades, you need to find something to distinguish yourself. Start joining some clubs, maybe a team. And definitely volunteer work. They love that. Do as many hours as you can, I had about 300 when I applied. Get active and get out there. You need more qualifications.

@bbhs12
Sorry this is so late! I’ve been so busy with finals. I’m sure you’ve gotten your results already, so I can only say that your stats would most likely place you in Stern. If you got accepted, congratulations! great job! If not, don’t despair. There are other schools, and you will inevitably end up somewhere you love.

@over4545
I don’t know much about transferring except that it’s extremely difficult to transfer. Your GPA looks great but I don’t know how well other transferees are doing, so I can’t accurately tell you what your chances for transfer are. Give it a shot though! You’ve got nothing to lose.

To address this debate between CAS econ and Stern:
The same opportunities are afforded to both. Recruiters visit both schools. After that, it all depends on you and what you do with those opportunities. Stern DOES NOT guarantee a job if you just sit back and wait for something to fall into your lap. This isn’t the way it works, and I’m tired of hearing people say that. In the end, it’s all up to YOU and what YOU do and how hard YOU work.

Hi Jen! Stern has been my dream school. Im from arizona and was wondering if you could give me some feedback :)

My GPA sucks, I know. Does it completely rule me out for stern? I think my Ecs are great, and SATs aren’t bad. I’m going to address my gpa, basically, spent a lot of time doing other things, and didn’t see the importance in school early on, immaturity basically. GPA has been going up from 3.28 freshman and sophomore year to 3.7ish junior and senior. I REALLY REALLY want to go here, I’m applying ED2. Do I have even a chance, or did I mess myself up completely with my gpa. Do my ECs count for much if my GPA sucks. Thanks so much! You’re so lucky to be at Stern!! :)

@Londra
Well you know already what I’m going to tell you, your GPA is a bit low. Stern typically averages a 3.7. However, this doesn’t mean you have no chance. You still have a chance, everyone does. The fact that you say you’ve progressed over the years is really good. They typically take that into account. And your ecs are great, SAT is pretty good. I’d say you might have a chance, the only thing that could really hurt you is your GPA in the end. Best of luck! Work hard on those essays!
