So Jen ap statistics would put me in a better position than pre Calc or regular calculus?

@Southend96
You need AT LEAST precalc to even apply to Stern. Most applicants take some level of calc. Substituting AP Stats for calc is not going to work. I can’t emphasis how much you need a calc class. Are you a junior right now? If you are, you still have time next year to take calc.

Wow 11, that’s awesome! And what time is your latest class and when does it end? Sorry, last question, lol. Thanks in advance!

Hi Jen! thanks for this amazing thread! i really learned a lot about Stern. and now i just have to get in. haha. So can you plz chance me?

I am applying to Stern(ED II).

SAT1: 2230 (CR:740, M:730, W:760( essay:12)
SATII: U.S. History- 800, World History- 770, Korean with listening- 800
AP: World history (5), U.S. History(5), AP Cal (5), AP Literature (4) (sent all of them)
GPA: 9th: 3.86
10th: 4.01
11th:4.27
*very competitive public school…(my school doesn’t do unweighted GPA)
I took all honors and ap classes. currently taking 5 ap classes (total of 9)

E.C. - mostly focused on music (a few awards & regional and state level )
Several prestigious orchestras (for 4 years )
community service ( been doing for 5years. so i’m guessing more than 300 hrs)
4 leadership positions (all presidents)
founded a community out reach program that helps under-represented and
underprivileged children.
and honor socieites and clubs that don’t really matter…

-I am an international student living in the states so I’ll be paying the full price.
- I think my essays are pretty strong… at least i hope so. :3

Stern is my dream school. I really want to get in and I’ll be devastated if i don’t…
so, what are my chances?

p.s. is it true that EDII is more competitive than the regular decision? I thought applying EDII would give me a boost… ?

No I’m a sophomore but I’ll make sure to try to fit in some kind of Calc in my high shool curriculum

@Noldi
No problem! My latest class last semester was at 4:55 and ended at 6:10. It was only once a week though, I usually got before 5 so it was great.

@muhandojun
Glad I could help! You have some really great stats. What ap classes are you taking this year? I think you have a good shot of getting in. Also, I don’t really know much about ED II. It’s fairly new, last year was the first year they implemented it. But I would say it’s pretty much just as competitive as ED I, but don’t hold me to that. Best of luck!

@Southend96
Definitely take calculus some time in your high school career if you want to get into Stern

I’m taking apstat, aplit, apgov, ap french, and ap environmental science. I’m so nervous because I’m asian and also an international student which means its harder for me to get in… right? gahhh but thanks for your input! i really hope i can get in.

Hey Jen,

I think I saw somewhere that with a good enough SAT writing mark, people can get out of WTE, which I heard is a pretty useless class. Loll what mark do you need to get in order to skip that class? And would it be worth it if I were to retake the SAT just to skip that class? Is it that bad??

@banterings
yes, I think you need a score of 750 but I might be wrong (check the nyu website, it’ll be there). The class is horrible. It is literally the worst and most pointless class I have ever taken. If you can get out of it, definitely do it.

LoL… It does sound pretty bad… What did you do? Were there very pointless projects? Were there time consuming essays? Or was the class just bothersome to go to? Loll I can write but it takes me a long time to squeeze out an essay… And so I don’t have that kind of SAT marks either. I might really go retake the SAT after I heard how bad I should want to get out of that class. Hahah

Writing The Essay isn’t that bad… I find that a majority of NYU frosh come in with subpar writing skills and that’s why WTE is so hard for a lot of people. I got an A-, with A’s on the first two essays and an infuriating B on the last essay (which I swear he gave to me just to lower my grade. Ugh.)

I found that the more personal I got in my writings (i.e. I made up a story about a lesbian cousin and seeing drag queens in Costco) the more my professor liked it.

@banterings
The readings were awful. We never even picked up a book. I miss reading in english class. The essays were always time consuming, and on the most pointless topics. Whatever you wrote, you were never right. You were just always wrong, no matter what. All my time went into this class, instead of important classes like micro and calc. If you can skip it, I can’t emphasis how much you should.

@justspice
Excuse me, don’t insult me on my own thread. I don’t have sub par writing skills, tell it to someone else. When you have a professor that doesn’t believe in ever giving out A’s because a paper can never be that good, you can’t get an A, so don’t tell me I don’t know how to write. And you can take your made up personal stories and tell them to someone else. Don’t post if you’re going to be rude about it.

I wasn’t saying you had subpar writing skills, it’s a general observation. Anyway, my professor was the same, and most WTE professors are like that, so you’re not special. Also, I was offering advice - advice on how to actually succeed in the class. Whining about the class does nothing to help people.

Banterings, if you take WTE, it’s better to accept your fate and embrace writing the essays instead of griping about them. Take advantage of office hours and the writing center (make sure to book two/three weeks before you actually need it). The first two essays can actually be quite fun and cathartic if you don’t bemoan your fate before something bad actually happens. Also, take DiYanni if you can.

Thanks for the info though

Thank you both for your insights! I will definitely TRY and make the 750 writing on the SAT… But after practicing for so long and only getting a 690, I don’t know how feasible that goal is…
from justspice’s posts, it seems to me that people only had to write 3 essays for the whole class? Or am I deluding myself? How long are these essays? And are the topics always the same/similar? If they are, could someone tell me the topics? Maybe I can find a way to alter scholarship/common app essays to fit the topic.

@banterings
There are only three essays, but it’s an intense class. You think three essays isn’t a big deal right now, but each essay is difficult and time consuming. Plus you have exercises in between, due every class. It’s not as simple as it sounds. Each essay is usually 5-7 pages. The last essay is typically longer. The topics are the same, but the outside writings you have to choose from vary from year to year and from professor to professor. There’s no way to do them in advance. Especially the last essay, which from what I know has a changing book list every year. Don’t alter your common app essays, the admissions committee will not make sense of them (trust me).

Hi Jen, do you think my re-internal-transfer (second time) will increase the chance?
I am from CAS, Sophmore, GPA:3.7.
I heard that last year a bunch of people get in.

Do I have a chance of getting into Sterns NYU (early decision)?
I am currently a Junior
For 9th and 10th grade, I attended public school where i received a GPA of about 95%.
I now am at a private boarding school near NYC.
My GPA for this year will be at least 90%

My best SAT score so far is 2050
SAT II French 700
SAT II Chemistry 730

-Internship at a real-estate company
-Taken an entrepreneurship college course online through Brown University
-I have been Vice President of my class
-Attended HOBY Leadership Conference
-Attended a business course at Clarkson University
-National Honor Society
-In 3 clubs
-Play Varsity Sports
-Have community service hours
-Will be taking 2-3 AP Classes Senior Year

**(At the time to apply for college) My biggest feat, I believe, is that I have had a summer job at a coffee shop/art gallery for 4 years, 2 of which I was head manager.

I know I don’t have the stats to get into schools like Columbia, Dartmouth, or UPenn, but I’m hoping I will have a decent chance for Sterns, especially if I ED.

My goal is to pursue International Business and real-estate.

On a less serious note, which are some of the better dining halls?

Hi, I know everyone wants you to chance them. Let me introduce myself; I’m everyone.

Note that I live in a town that qualifies as a rural in good 'ole Kansas USA, and I hope to use that as my “hook” to some extent.
ACT: 30 (I just took it again and am hoping for a higher score)
GPA: 3.68 (I’m a junior, so I’m still hoping to raise it to at least a clean 3.7)
AP: AP Euro (didn’t do well) and will take AP Lang&Comp and APUSH this year, as well as AP Lit and maybe AP Psych next year
Honors English and math freshman and sophomore years (I have always taken the hardest class available for core classes)
Plenty of extracurriculars and community service, including things like tennis, Relay for Life committee, Big Brothers Big Sisters, board membership at a local bank, etc and I’m also the member of many school clubs
Applied to National Honors Society (fingers crossed)
Also, I don’t know that it matters, but I’ve had the same job since the summer before sophomore year.
I think my recommendation letters will be very strong. I know I plan on working hard on my essays, so here’s hoping that those are good too!

Thanks!
