Hey, I posted something similar to this before, but I realized it was somewhat confusing of a post. I go to NYU Stern, and have a GPA of about 3.1 I am really interested in going into IB, and realize with my GPA, that is really difficult to do. I know I will not be getting GS or anything super glamorous, and I am fine with that. I am a minority, and am planning on applying to some of the minority outreach internship opportunities (SEO, InRoads, HACU, goldman sachs diversity scholars, etc.). Also, I REALLY want to work in Los Angeles. After living in both LA and NYC, I think LA takes the cake by tenfold, and I know it is where I belong. I was wondering, how is iBanking in LA? Is it easier to get in to? Does going to NYU Stern carry any weight, or is it completely outshined by Haas and Marshall? Do I have a chance at any firms here, no matter how large or small? What is the pay scale like (ie, how much less do you get paid on the west coast than east, on average)?

^bump^ - I’m curious to hear the answers.

Going from East Coast investment banking to West Coast investment banking is like a student going from Harvard undergrad to State College grad.

I wasnt referring to transferring, well, hopefully not. I don’t completely understand your analogy, Pakistan.

I’m trying to say not many people in Stern look for banking jobs in the west coast because most investment banks ( I said “most” not “all”) are located on the east coast.

NuclearPakistan1: I’m not totally sure bout the accuracy of that information. If I understand correctly, the reason why Stern people don’t get west coast jobs is because west coast offices recruit students from a different range of schools (Cal Berkeley, Stanford, etc.)

West coast banking jobs are just as good as their east coast counterparts, just different groups. someone at a Morgan Stanley tech group in San Francisco will have exit ops just as good as someone in M&A in NY

awesome, but I was asking about the LA area.

Still, most of the LA jobs are filled by extremely qualified applicants from Stanford and Haas. I’m not too familiar with the job prospects of IB at Marshall.

Besides your personal preference of the city of LA, are you not applying to East Coast IB jobs because the competition is too stiff? If so, realize that the same intensity of competition exists on the West Coast, which has less banking opportunities as well.

With a low GPA coming out of Stern, I would suggest investigating some other job/further education possibilities.

ah, ok. No, I am not only applying west coast, but it is where I am born and raised, and I can give you a big spiel as to why I prefer west to east. For finance, Stern > Haas, so I was hoping that would carry some kind of weight with it. I understand my GPA is a bit low, but would that not even get me an interview at Boutiques or Middles? I am hispanic, and am applying to some of the minority outreach programs as stated above, so I was hoping that would at least help me in getting the interview. Anyone else have any experience with these sorts of things?
