Stern Investment Banking

I'm attending NYU Stern next year and plan to major in Finance. My ultimate goal is getting into investment banking, and I just need a little advice on how to get there. First off, I would like to know how difficult is it to land an Ibanking position, specifically from Stern (for example, how many people look for an IB job and how many people get it).

Also, what type of GPA, extracurriculars, and other things do I need to maximize my chances to land an Ibanking position? Are there any tips/advice?

And lastly, I plan on majoring in finance is a minor in computer science advisable? Thanks in advance for all the feedback.

you will probably get most of your answers if you do a search on Stern and ibanking. You have great chances and also great competition.

computer science would be redundant for finance. The best course of action would be to take what you can handle with ease and maintain a very high gpa, because at the end of the day that is what matters most in IB recruiting and not even the type of courses you took.

1) you don’t need the comp sci minor unless you want it for yourself; keep your GPA high and mix some accounting coursework in with that fin degree.

2) there is a great deal of opportunity coming from Stern to IB, but there is also a ton competition as most students are going for IB and MC.

If you want top boutiques/BBs, you will need to stand out - high GPA, networking, keep up with news, know the technicals, etc - if you just want IB - boutique, BB or MM, it will still be competitive but not as much so

IBanker

My kid is sophmore in WUSTl, majoring in Econ & math. He is targeting to work after graduatation. Now has GPA 3.9 ,last summer had intern with Deloitte CPA firm, this summer can have intern with Deloitte Consulting in China

Actually, a top GPA from a hard major such as Engineering or Comp Science is WAY better than a top in Econ or finance

This is not true for investment banking. For trading or something quantitative, perhaps, but not ibd.
