stern laptop requirement

im going to stern this september, and i noticed on the site that they have these laptop requirements.

NYU Stern Information Technologies

Do i actually have to get all of the programs that they require, or are they just making a big fuss out of nothing? If i have to get some programs, can someone tell me which ones i would actually need? Also, would a mac or windows be better for stern?

hey. im going to be a junior in Stern. i want to say that they are making a big fuss for no reason. but there are certain programs, such as simnet and minitab that wont run on certain computers. i know that minitab doesnt run on macs.

but it really isnt a big deal. all the computers in stern labs have all the programs you will need.

thanks a bunch, nyuking

Would you say that we need windows vista business edition, or just regular home/student edition is fine?

I want to take a laptop from my home country, but the charger has a three pin plug and it is 230V compared to the US’ 120V. Could I make do with an adapter?

Reviving this thread. I have decided to get the 2.4GHz MacBook from the NYU Store and it says that purchasing Windows Vista Business Edition and VMWare Fusion 2 is recommended.

However, I am wondering… is the extra $340 worth it? Will we be using programs on Windows frequently or do most students with Macs just use the Stern computer labs when dealing with programs like Minitab?

install windows on your mac

most programs are needed according to the courses you take and your professor. You do not need to buy “required” programs until you get your syllabus. This way you save yourself some money and effort. Worst case scenario, just use the computers at the computer labs or the stern computer lab

The laptop I am looking to purchase when I get to nyu has just regular windows vista- is the business version REALLY required? Like, how vital are the business features that I can’t get on normal vista? I don’t want to shell out hundreds if it isn’t absolutely necessary.

business version isnt really necessary. they are both the same OS, just different features. those features seem to be for small businesses. take a look on their website. There’s Vista Enterprise but that isnt sold to consumers…

They should be able to run the same programs with no problems.

Basic and Premium is all you need. Windows XP is good too. besides if you happen to get basic or premium, you can always “upgrade”.

MACs arent recommended. some can use virtualization to emulate Linux or Windows Operating systems but it’s not always reliable.

This is probably a bit too late to ask in this forum but I hope someone can help me…i’m going to stern in september and i got a new macbook pro last year…out of the comments above, some say that windows is all right, or that i should install windows on my mac…is this absolutely required? is there anyone who’s studied only with mac os and with no trouble?

and if i have to get another laptop, is the dell model they propose really the best option?

ok so I am a stern rising sophomore with a pc, but had some friends with Macs. Just use your mac, and the only class you take freshman year that requires windows only software is stats, for which you can borrow a laptop, use one of our special pc’s in the stern only computer lab, or if they are group hw assignments, buddy up with someone who has a pc.

Bump… Just wondering if I should get a MB Pro or a Windows Ultrabook for Stern next year?

Most students (in my CAS classes) had macbooks and macbook pros; take from that what you will.

Lol, we now use windows 8 :p.
