Stern or CAS? Urgent, please help!

Hi, I'll be applying EDII to NYU as my top choice school and I need to make a last minute decision on whether to apply to Stern or CAS. I originally intended to apply to Stern but I'm hesitant because of my stats. Here they are:

Male/Asian

Attend highly ranked public high school in NJ

Decent essays/Rec's

School doesn't rank

Unweighted GPA: 3.74

Weighted GPA: 4.19
*Two things of note with GPA's at my school:

We only have A's, B's, etc (no +/-)

Highest possible weighted is around a 4.70

SAT's
- Math: 680 CR: 750 W: 660 (Wish M and CR were switched)
- Total: 2090 (one sitting)
- Subject tests: Math I: 740, US History: 730, Chemistry: 650
(Shouldve taken Lit too, oh well)

AP US History: 5 (junior year)

Senior Schedule: AP Econ Macro/Micro, AP Calculus AB, AP Environmental Science, AP English, AP Psychology, Sociology

EC's:
- School Newspaper (editor-in-chief- senior, layout editor- junior, writer- soph/freshman)- about 500 hours last few years
- Concert Choir- senior/junior
- FBLA- senior/junior
- TV & Film Society- soph/freshman

Community Service/Work:
- Sisters of Life Convent and Soup Kitchen- 250 hrs
- Tennis Club (supervise kids matches)- 100 hrs
- St. David's Relief (Bosnian work camp)- 2 week summer trip, plan to do again in future
- Oxfam America (humanitarian/environmental initiatives)- 50 hrs
- Tutoring- 50 hrs
- Department of Army- 2 month summer work at base operations/command center for the summer (attend meetings, filing, paperwork, etc. while gaining insight on how army base runs)

Nat'l Honors Society/Spanish Honors Society

Honors with Distinction

Notes:
- Both my sisters work on Wall St - big motivating influence
- One of my teachers who is doing a rec for me actually attended NYU CAS (my Eng teacher/newspaper adviser)

I would likely do Int'l Business at Stern or Econ at CAS. I would love to go to Stern as it's my top choice but I'm not sure if it's worth the risk. I see my academics/EC's/volunteer as pretty average. Please advise. Thank you!

Deadline is in 2 days, still cant decide. BUMP!

I would apply to Stern, you are about the average applicant in terms of scores and GPA and you have some good EC’s.

What do you want to major in and what do you want to do? IMO Stern’s definitely the better school if you want to go into business-related fields but if you’re thinking about something else than CAS might be the way to go?

I’d probably major in Int’l Business or Marketing with a minor in BEMT if I go to Stern.
I was wondering though, is BEMT offered as a minor if you go to CAS? And I’m also really worried none of my EC’s or volunteer really are directly related to business. Will that hurt my chances for Stern?

To my knowledge, BEMT isn’t available as a minor at CAS. The only thing business related you can minor in at CAS is Business Studies, which I consider to be a BS minor. That said, I think you have a 50-50 chance at Stern, so it’s hard for me to give you advice one way or another.

I’m a CAS Econ major though and I feel if you apply yourself, the opportunities are the same as someone in Stern (in terms of job/internship recruiting, at least)

I applied to Stern EDII!
Thanks for the chances. Any more input?

BEMT is a cross-school minor, anyone can minor in it.

BEMT is a tri-school minor, so I’m fairly sure it’s open to anyone in the university. There’s no reason a Stern-Steinhardt-Tisch minor would be open only to students in those schools. I’m in it and I haven’t met anyone in it who isn’t in one of those three, but I’m more inclined to believe that’s because they’re those most likely to know about it and not the only ones allowed.

Best of luck with your Stern application. I think you stand quite a fair chance. Chuckling a bit at the comment about CAS econ giving you the same opportunities as Stern, but it’s no big. Stern is considered a target for bulge bracket firms. NYU is not. Harsh at that may seem, it’s simply true and recruiters are generally very frank about it. The access you have to alumni, faculty willing to give you referrals or recommendations, world-class professors across the board, and a ridiculous network of kids in your year who you’ll be entering the professional world with simultaneously all adds up, whereas out of all those attributes, most people would only credit CAS econ with the professors.
