I am posting this for a good friend of mine who was recently rejected from stern undergrad. We are both perplexed as to why he was rejected, and I wanted to know if we are way off base as to the level of admissions there, or if you think something weird happened. (He called the school but said they were too busy to talk or something like that.)
so here are his stats
SAT I: 1520 out of 2, 2220 out of 3
SAT 2: 790 Math level 2, 740 us history, 720 literature
Rank in class: 17/a little more than 500 at very competitive public high school

8 ap's in high school (2 of them were one semester each,) along with 2 courses at local community college
received only 3 b's in all of high school, everything else was an a

extracurriculars/Awards: DECA State Vice President, Top 10 in national deca competition, numerous top placings at state level, national merit finalist (semifinalist when he applied i guess. dunno if he updated his application,) yale or harvard book award (def one of them), active member and holds office in a ton of clubs, 300+ hours community service, worked in school store for a year, and some other stuff like that (alot more stuff)

teacher and guidance recs were very good (he says he saw them and is sure)
i read his common app essay and it was amazing, i dunno about those little ones on the supplement but they were probly good too

and...i think thats everything, sorry for the length of the post and any responses are appreciated!

The only thing I can say is that I feel like college apps here are kind of a crap shoot. There are super-talented people who could be at Ivy League schools, and then there are kids who make me wonder, "How the heck did you get here?"

You know... my newest pet theory is that after a certain point, the amount of extra-cirriculars you're involved in begins to work against you.

so you think maybe he was in too many? very interesting, ill try to get a specific list next time i talk to him

again thanks for all the input!

Well, I was specifically referring to "active member and holds office in a ton of clubs." This one girl I know had a peerless extra-cirricular list, and was rejected by 5/7 of her schools. My only logical explanation was that perhaps she had too many. You can't really express how dedicated you are to each club on paper, even though you may put your whole heart into every single activity.

This is all, however, speculation. :D

i know people with similar if not better stats than your friend that got rejected this year. its getting very competetive

Hey man, lemme tell u a REALLY messed up case.

My friend (guy)

2320 SATI!!!
3.9GPA
4.6 Weighted GPA
800 MathIIC and 790 something else

Maryland Distinguished Scholar
AP Scholar with Distinction
National Merit Finalist

Plays lots of sports and has plenty of ECs with leadership

....wait-listed to George Washington!!! (No, not some strangely competitive program, just the NORMAL GW)

He also got wait-listed to Georgetown (still pretty messed up), rejected from columbia, harvard, and yale.
