Stern Scholars - Freshman Honors Seminar

Can any current students offer any advice on which ones they've heard are good or vice versa? Thanks.

anyone? lol

It sounds great in theory, but unless you find a good class, you're just wasting electives. I took the chaos theory one because I like that sort of stuff (physics and math intensive) but the class turned out to be a dud. The teacher was really old and didn't really teach anything. A girl I know took the leadership one, and apparently it was really hard. Unless you're really interested in a subject, I'd advise against Freshman Honors Seminar, because it counts only as electives, and they're not even really fun.

I applied to the leadership one! haha i want my request cancelled.

oh, darn, I wanted to take that chaos theory class, lol. Not anymore =]

Thanks kyang

I was really excited for that class because I want to do a physics minor, but th rest of the class turned out to be people who didn't really know any math or science at all, which forced the teacher not to teach anything. Plus, it doesn't go towards any minors, just wasting precious electives.

can we cancel our requests? lol. sounds not so interesting

When do you request these?

my top three requests were:

Art of the enemy

Language and Reality in 20th-Century Science and Literature

The Music of Protest and the Politics of Music

Do any current students have any comments or experiences with these seminars? Are they good, bad?

I took Art of the Enemy. I hope you know that it is NOT about the "Art of War" as a bunch of kids in the class thought it was. It was sort of interesting, we got to take a "field trip" or two, generous grading, but not a life-changing class.

Still, if you can afford the credits, I think it's good to take sort of random classes. Taking Stern classes all the time is boring!

youkosiren, does the seminar count towards your 18 credit limit for one semester?

of course, if you're planning on taking it for credit. It's a class, just set up a bit differently than, say, conwest.

I am taking the Leadership one.. is it so ridiculously difficult as some students say? I would like to hear from someone with firsthanded experience.

sigh... the CAS evaluation guide indicates the difficulty of the course is 4.87, out of possible 5 (being the hardest). -_-a
