Stern students: happy?

This one is specifically for those in the undergraduate business program at Stern: do you guys like it?

Are the classes interesting?
Is the atmosphere within the business school nice?
Are your classmates interesting people?
Are you overall happy?

Bumpity bump bump

Sum of my 1st year:

Classes - I came from a public high school where we were encouraged to debate...a lot. Most classes were just us yelling at each other with the teachers making sure no blood was spilled. It was a lot of fun, heh. That being said, the biggest adjustment for me was huge classes where you go, take notes, take a midterm/final that resembles a chapter test, and be done with it. It wasn't very intellectually stimulating, something I was looking forward to coming to college. I remember in comp based, our professor tried to spark a discussion on the issues surrounding file sharing, and while one other kid and I tried to keep things going, students seemed to be more interested in "is this on the final?" Still, I've heard classes get more interesting as you go up (these are intro classes after all), more challenging, and more team focused.

Atmosphere within the business school was pretty friendly. It was pretty easy to form some study groups and there were a lot of cool people who were great to hang out with outside of class (see also: Cool Sternies facebook group, lol, j/k). Student council is a great place to meet people too.

Classmates: Hmm, this is an interesting one for me actually. Again, there are some really cool people and I'm sure you'll have no problem making friends or anything, but this was just something I noticed. My school was predominantely white (like 95%), so culturally, it was a really interesting experience to learn about all these different backgrounds. My roommate was from Singapore, and my other suitemate was from Dubai (both in Stern) so we traded a lot of stories. But when it comes to diversity of opinions and ideas, everyone thinks along pretty similar lines. This is mostly because of similar circumstances (all business students, most are upper middle to upper class, most focused on grades, jobs, etc.), but it was very different for me compared to high school, where you had people from all social backgrounds, looking at everything ranging from the military to mechanics to theoretical math majors in one class. I guess it's what you're used to.

Overall: Yes I'm happy. College is what you make of it, IMO, more so at NYU than any other place.

great post..made me more assured about attending stern
