This is the first I have heard of this: it says on the page about registering for classes that Stern students with an SAT writing score of 750 or above are exempt from taking "Writing the Essay", while anyone who got a 720-740 takes a special course instead of WTE.

Did this surprise anyone else? It's the first I've heard of it.

is the SAT Writing really such a good measure of writing skills? i was especting the "Writing The Essay" class to be a really advanced english class which will teach you stuff like writing research papers, and other stuff which is far more complex than the pretty rudimentary skills tested on the SAT...oh well, it's apparently not

I agree that the SAT Writing probably shouldn't compare to what WTE is supposed to teach you. Additionally, why would they consider the SAT but not the AP English Literature/Language tests?? That test requires two more essays than the SAT, and one would think it would be more thorough.

lol me too, but i have the feeling that those who didn't place out of WTE will be at an advantage cuz they will learn stuff not covered by the SAT writing section!

Don't get too excited - even people who place out of the regular WTE have to take the Stern WTE in the spring, and I would say that the subject matter for the Stern one is more boring (though I lucked out with a prof who didn't really care about it)
