Stern to Wharton, Stanford, Harvard

Hey guys, my friend from Stern is looking to transfer out to wharton, stanford or harvard for fall 2007. After his freshman year he has a 3.84 gpa. As for his HS Records: Rank 2/256, 4.0 GPA UW, 1460 SAT, SAT II, 780,740,580. Is there any successful transfers out of Stern on CC that could help out. Anybody with ideas on his chances based simply on stats?

Maybe he should see if he likes Stern first. :)

lol well, he only liked it to an extent. The financial aid was horrible and he wants to go to a better school overall.

yeah.. I understand your friend.

after talking to five people in the math department on the phone, I wanted to transfer out so badly (they are so mean!)

lol

lol yeah i dont think he was liking it too much there. Im guessing maybe the people and the city eventually got to him. He also told me the financial aid was so bad.

The financial aid is bad, but your friend still chose to go. If he got into Stern, he surely was good enough to get into a state school with a lower tuition bill or more financial aid. If money's an issue, he shouldn't have enrolled at all - it would've prevented buyer's remorse.

That being said, do any of those school give aid to transfers? If they don't, he might very well be jumping from the frying pan into the fire.

well.. all those ivies and stanford are rich enough to give financial aid to almost everyone... (including transfers)

yeah, actually he didnt want to go to Rutgers because he figured a transfer from there would be much harder than a transfer from Stern. So he had to make a sacrifice for a stronger stepping stone to where he really wants to be.

Your friend wasn't happy with Rutgers or Stern, and he wants to go to Stanford, Wharton, or Harvard. I don't want to leap to conclusions about your friend, but it seems to me that he might be obsessed with status. Without more information on what he doesn't like about Stern and what he wants in a school, I can't find any reason to encourage him to apply to those schools. He could hate it even more, and then what good would that be?

Yeah im assuming he's all about status. He is just trying to get into the best school possible. He was just asking me about his chances to those schools. Not much about why he doesnt like Stern etc...

Sure, your friend has a chance statistically, but if the only reason he wants to leave is because Stern isnt good enough for him, there is no chance. He needs to have a damn good reason to leave NYU and especially a program like Sterns. Unless he has some serious experiences, he wont have a chance with stanford and harvard.

Yeah I definately agree with you. Im really not sure about his motives or anything. I just know the stats and he wants to leave. But according to him alot of Sternies try to transfer out. Is that true?

A few do. I had a friend who transferred into Wharton after freshman year and a few who internal transferred to CAS. But it's not like 10% of the class transfers. As for his chances, they look as good as anybody's, but transfer admissions are a crapshoot. Also, I think Wharton takes many less junior year transfers compared to sophomores. Dunno about Harvard/Stanford.
