Stern vs. Kelley School of Business

Hello,

I am a senior in high school who plans on majoring in business- most likely management or marketing. I'm fortunate enough to have been offered a full ride to Indiana University Bloomington/ Kelley School of Business but have also been fortunate enough to be accepted into NYU/ Stern. My question is, considering it would cost me about $60,000 a year including room & board, do you find attending NYU worth giving up the scholarship for?

Thank you so much!

Congrats on both! I’m attending Kelley at IU on scholarship as well but considered applying to NYU Stern at the beginning of my journey, but ultimately decided not to. I’m full pay as well, which also played into my college decisions.

Stern is one of the biggest target schools in business because of it’s reputation and location. If you would be interested in finance, this decision would be much harder. However, you are looking into other fields and Kelley is ranked top 20 for undergrad business and ranked top 10 in many specialty business majors.

Save yourself the money and take the Kelley full ride, you’ll be at the top of your class and you’ll be able to cultivate a strong relationship with the alumni base. But, if money is no object and you desire an urban location (both campuses are very different), choose NYU.

It’s a fit thing and a cost decision.

I would advise you to take the full ride, work hard, network, and be top of your class at Kelley rather than incur the kind of debt that Stern would give you. This is assuming, I think, that your family’s income is upper-middle class and below. If, however, your family can afford to pay it in near full then go ahead and go to Stern!

Thank you both so much for your input! I think I’ll be attending Indiana come fall :D

Yeah, Stern is known for Finance rather than Marketing and Management. Going debt free to a top program like Kelly would be the best choice.

The finance department at Stern is phenomenal , but the marketing + management are also very strong, both ranked #5 by US News. Kelley is still at #9 for those two fields, so it’s an excellent choice as well.
