stern vs. mcdonough

Planning on accounting. Want to maximize earning potential, but not to the extent that I'd endure a torturous experience. help me decide. do not have to respond to any/all the factors.

Factors I noticed/considered:

Stern ranked only a little higher on businessweek than mcdonough

Stern has higher scores, but georgetown is better overall

Stern is only praised for finance

mcdonough has a better alumni network, so better jobs (from someone in the georgetown forums)

on businessweek, georgetown is ranked highly as an mba feeder school

Stern kids portrayed as overly-competetive and cutthroat (am hard working myself and would love to take classes with very dedicated students, but am put off by idea of being backstabbed)

Come from a Jesuit high school and like the tradition, so probably would like peers of that ilk

always hear that georgetown is full of rich preppy kids (would rather do without)

if georgetown makes good on its promise to meet all need, i would get about twice as much as i'm getting for stern (not a deal-breaker)

if i get into stern, would have the problem of deciding whether i should commute and save 10 grand

6-7 hour trip to d.c.

nyc is a little too urban. thought of it kind of depresses me.

i'm a humble person, and kind of like the idea that some ignorant people, who know nothing about the academic quality of stern and consider nyu as overrated, would not think of me as highly as they would if i went to georgetown

What ranking did you look out? It's easier to get into McDonough than it is to get into Stern. Georgetown's business school is fairly new so I think Stern is better developed, but at the same time, you obviously have the Georgetown name attached to McDonough (it won't be too difficult to get recruited for jobs). And the last time I checked, McDonough ranked in the 30s for undergrad business while i think Stern was #6 or 7....I could be wrong though.

looked at 2007 businessweek undergraduate rankings. from 2006 to 2007, stern dropped from 7 to 9, and mcdonough went up from 13 to 11.

and that's part of my problem. would i be better off in Stern that is harder to get into, or mcdonough which has georgetown's name?

Best-Stressed07: you're right. stern is 7th for its undergraduate business program. It is ranked 2nd/3rd for finance and 1st for international business, i think. it's also ranked 9th for "toughest to get into." 5th for "college town and college experience. " 7th for "more opportunities for women." and sth else... but i forgot. i'll find out later

i would say mcdonough b/c it's tied to georgetown. and just in general, i think you would have a better experience in DC, especially if you don't really want to be in an ultra urban environment. do you have any mentors in accounting/finance that may be able to weigh in? based on what you've written though, i'd say georgetown.

just wondering, where did you find that information? I never saw it in the magazine.

^ Yeah, do tell.

& another factor i have to consider. I would not have the funds to board for summer courses. so NYU would be better for that since I can commute. for georgetown, I'd have to figure out something..
