realistically speaking, what does it take to get into the undergraduate business program at nyu stern

its stats driven so get high test scores and class rank.

for a good chance get above 1450/1600 on your SAT's, and be in top 1-10% of your class, depending on the caliber of your high school.

I'm sure others get in with the usual stuff too. Demonstrated interest in NYU, good EC's, taking the toughest courses at your high school. I'll be a Sternie this fall. Hope to see you next year.

hsseniorlooking, what were your stats? will it hurt my chances if i didn't really take any business classes at my high school or did not take part in DECA? i have many other solid EC's like debate captain, school paper editor, nhs, volunteer work etc.....

dont take business classes. focus more on the ap aspects and do well. stern doesnt give any credit for any business classes taken. and people i know got a lot lower than 1450 on their sat, so dont be discouraged.

coolnyu, so the fact that i'm not at all involved with deca and not at all taking business classes, but I WILL HAVE 11 AP'S through all of high school i should be ok???? granted that everything else is up to par...

i dont even know what deca is and we didnt have business classes, so I think you're fine.

DECA is like the business, marketing "that stuff" club

I didn't get involved in DECA until my senior year. Although I did end up going to the DECA National competition in Orlando this year. My Stats:

GPA W 4.6 UW 3.88
Class Rank: 1 out of 300
SAT's: Math 740; Verbal 800; CR 800
NM Commendation
AP Bio, AP US History 5
just took AP Calculus
SAT II: US History 740; Biology 740; Math 730

I didn't do DECA either. In my school, mostly the kids in shop or horticulture did that... I really don't think Stern cares at all about it - if you have it, it's probably a +, but it's not a - if you didn't.

DECA doesn't matter. I didn't do anything business-related (the closest I got to business was my stint working at Jo-Ann Fabrics), and I got in. However, Stern looks for leadership positions, I think, because I remember this thread a couple weeks ago talking about how this kid had really high stats but got rejected. I think it was because they didn't have any leadership positions, but I think you're pretty on track with that, seeing what you do. Yeah, so it's stats, leadership, and the APs don't hurt either.

just remember, leadership activities are very easy to make up, since colleges never bother to check (Wish I realized this so I could've gone to HPY).

leadership positions..........school newspaper editor, debate team captain..those are good right?

Good enough - I was debate team captain too :D

I wouldn't make up leadership activities - that's just lame.

ya it really makes me mad when people make up those type of positions

good enough...as in very good or just ok?

Nothing's going to make you a 100% shoo-in (except, say, winning the Intel Science competition or some other national award thing). Just saying I too was captain of the debate team, and I just graduated from Stern, make of that what you will...

what were your other things (sats, gpa, ec's etc.)? did you always know you wanted to major in business? what do you want to do?

how much does debate team captain help? i mean its one of the best leadership positions, right?

I had pretty high test scores and GPA. ECs, not so much - just did debate, pretty much. One year of crew, and one year of this volunteering organization. I decided to do business pretty much because senior year, I was like, "well, my dad does econ and I like that all right - ok, sure, business." I didn't even hear of Stern until probably October or November (I'm from Ohio - we don't really go out of state, lol). So yeah, you can totally chill out about things (and you should! You're already almost at your senior year, so there's really nothing you can worry about besides essays and maybe SATs).

I can't tell you how much being captain of the debate team helps - I'm not an admissions officer. It's not like NYU admissions works on a point system or anything.

Average sat score at stern is like a 1440, kids here are pretty smart, though I know of extremely qualified well rounded people who didn't make the cut. But i agree, its a very numbers driven game, you just need the essay's, GPA, and ability to outline your interests to the admisions comitee.

so if my sats were not as high as 1440, but say about 1400..if i wrote excellent essays and outlines my interests i'd have a good shot? outline interests??
