Sterny wants to go to Stern!!

I am currently a junior at one of the best schools in the nation (top 40 according to US NEWS and like top 50 according to Newsweek). Trust me its nothing to brag about, we're all getting our rear ends kicked hard (well at least me). But I just wanted to mention this so that you guys would get an idea for why my GPA is so low. Talking about GPA, here are my stats:

GPA: 3.4 UW (yea heckka low)
SAT I: 2360 (M: 800 CR:800 W:760) Superscore: 2400 (took it like twice)
ACT: 34 (M: 36 S: 35 R: 33 W:33)
SAT II: Math 2: 800; Lit: 770; Bio:800; Chem:780
AP: Comp Sci (5) {Last year}
Bio; Chem; Stats; Micro and Macro Econ {This year}
Class Schedule Junior Year:

AP Stats
AP Bio
AP Chem
Honors English
Honors Pre-Calc
AP US - not takin the test its useless for what I want to do; just did it for weighted GPA

My schedule may seem easy to you guys but I'm taking this at one of the best math and science high schools in the country. (Again not trying to brag but to explain the relation between low GPA and classes)

ECs:
Sports:
2 years of basketball
1 year of track (so far.. probably going to continue)

Clubs:
President of Bio Medical Research Club
DECA
Alternative Energy Secretary

I was a Bio Olympiad Semi Finalist last year

Did a Projects Abroad Program to Tanzania last summer where I had the opportunity to work as an intern in a hospital in rural Tanzania. I pretty much shadowed a doctor for about 2 weeks along with learning about how hospitals are in a foreign country. Along with this we went on a 5 day trip through villages and provided clinical care and helped the people there set up a local clinic available to them 24/7. Really fun!!!!!!

I also shadowed a nephrologist for around 30-40 hours last summer.

Founder of a non-profit organization in which we learn about finance and the stock market while at the same time donating our profits to the local charity. (A little more complex than this but don't really want to get into the details of it just yet (sorry). But in terms of importance and significance, I believe this is by far my best EC. And also I've gotten professors from Haas and Standard GSB to come give a lecture/seminar)

300 Hours of Volunteer Hours (Mostly at the hospital)(Got a lot of hours at this science camp for elementary kids)

Also this summer I'm traveling to rural India to plan + build an electrical wiring system that will supply electricity to 5-10 villages. I'm doing this with a non-profit international company.

Got rejected from LBW :(!!! So I don’t have anything related to business/finance to do over the summer!!

Doing research with a professor at Washington University in St. Louis this summer. I felt that it would be better for me to do something with my summer then just cry over LBW. So I planning to do research which I want to use to compete in Siemens Competition and Intel ISEF. I mean I know how ridiculous these things are in terms of toughness. I probably won’t stand much of a chance to all those science and math wizs out there. But hey its worth a shot and maybe things will work out!!!

Re-emerged this non-profit organization which deals with marketing. In a really short time my friends and I made got it to be well known by many companies in Northern California. I think this is by far my best extra cause it deals with real world experience.

DECA: I got 2nd place in my event for States, so now I’m gonna go to ICDC at the end of April to compete!! I’m hecka excited for this!!

I know its a lot but I just wanted to know how I was keeping up!! So there it is!!! Please chance!! Thank ya!!

Your stats look good, cept i dunno how much the fact that u have nothin biz related EC is gonna hinder you. Pull your gpa up to like at least a 3.6 or something and you should be good. Theoretically you’d be quite ideal (except for the fact that all your EC makes you look like you are preparing to study sci in uni…) But tbh, i’ve seen posts of IB kids with 2300+ getting rejected by stern and i have no idea why.

hey thanks for the reply CastoStern. Yea I agree that my extras are more oriented towards pre med and like biology. But do you think the two non profits and my DECA ICDC thing will help.

I don’t think it’ll matter too much, a business-related EC isn’t a requirement. My most prominent one was interning in a research lab. Though you may want to allude to your change in direction in one of your essays.

What is your class rank?

The thing is that I never changed direction. Ever since freshman year I’ve been greatly interested in both finance and medicine but I just had more opportunities to do bio/med related ECs. And my school neither weights GPA nor ranks. All it tells us is how many students it sends to each college. Thanks for the reply guys!!

Can you at least get your school’s average gpa? Your GPA doesn’t tell us much unless you put it in context. Colleges will receive your school’s profile, and using it they will be able to see where you fall among other students. If it is average, you have pretty low chances. But if your school has a low average gpa because it is difficult, then you have a good shot.

I can tell you only as much as I know. There are two different type of students at my school. Those that take like maybe 1 or 2 APs and gets a 3.7 or 3.85 and then there are those like me who take like 5-6 APs and gets 3.5 or 3.65. So I think overall I’ll be in the top 30% but if you consider classes then I’ll probably be somewhere in the top 5-10%.

Ofc a biz related internship is not a req for the application. But most other kids have some what of a variety in their EC while the OP’s ec are all geared towards one particular field. Like i said, i really don’t know how much this is going to effect you. I feel like you need a really good response for the application questions that ask you why you wanna be here. And i wouldn’t worry too much about class rank ,etc ,etc. Get above 3.6 (hopefully 3.7-3.8) and you’ll be in the same zone. And get those 4s&5s in your Aps this year. With good recs from your counsellor, teacher, or even principle and a decent app essay things should work out fine for u.

bumPPPP 10 charr!! Any other chances guys!!

Don’t even worry about having no EC related to business/finance. I got accepted with absolutely none. I conveyed through the essays my desire to learn, however. For example I described how American Gangster was my favorite movie because I was fascinated by his Nicky Barnes’ innovative street style business. Though I feel that is not even necessary if your just a well rounded student, which you appear to be. I also may or may not have mentioned that I had experienced managing some stocks, it may have been my Wharton application. For the common application essay I discussed diversity with an extended analogy comparing and contrasting myself to Alice from Alice in Wonderland, and it had nothing to do with finance whatsoever.
My stats:
3.7 uw (at the end of junior year, I got 6 A’s and 1 B during the first semester of senior year and sent in the grades) I also go to a pretty good public school in CA, but it’s nothing spectacular. Though I have taken 10 AP’s and showed an upward trend.
2290 SAT
800 US History, 720 Literature, 760 Math II
EC: 4 years as an editor/writer on school newspaper.
Some limited involvement in clubs I didn’t care about.
Studied at Stanford sophomore summer.
Service Trip to China junior summer.
Asian.

Get some good grades this semester and I think you’ll get in. Your application seems to be much more impressive than mine.

Good Luck.

Wow shootyoup thank you so much for such a detailed post. You just gave me a lot of confidence. (By the way you have really good stats- not that it matters now cause you’re already in Stern) Aight so I should just show the guys over at Stern my interest in finance and business through my essays. Aight got it. And through a few contacts I landed an internship with a CFO of a mid-size solar cell company. You think I should go or should I just concentrate on my research. It might sound strange that I got this offer in a week, but the CFO is just my cousin’s dad’s boss and I met him before so it was kinda easy.

I would do the internship. It sounds good.

Yeah its really last minute and I got it scheduled the 4 weeks before the research at Wash U starts. I know I shouldn’t be asking this but is it really worth it. Like do you guys think it’ll get the admission reps to give me a look even though I have such a bad gpa. Like I mean if its not all that worth it (I know I’m going to like doing it but…) then I can concentrate on my research. You guys get wat I mean??

bump!!! 10char

It wont make too much of a difference tbh, if you concentrate on research or do it wont affect the overall decision imo

bump 10 char!!!
