Looking for advice, please…My daughter got into Stevens Institute of Technology, SUNY Stony Brook and SUNY Binghampon. She wants to become an engineer (not sure which one-mechanical-chemical- or other) She qualifies for grants for full tuition at the SUNY schools but did not get accepted into any honors or research programs. SIT put her in an honors program, but she would have to take out a large loan to afford this school. How do they compare in the long run? Is it worth the debt to go to SIT, or are the SUNY schools just as good for engineering? If so, which one -Bing or SB? Thanks for your input!
For Engineering, if there is a lower cost school she should take it. SUNY Bing and Stony brook are very good universities…I think SB is a little more well known for Engineering.
My eldest went to SUNY Bing for Math and she loved it there.
I would not pay a premium for an Honors Program…usually if a student is interested in research or working with professors they can do that if they reach out.
It is a good schools but I would not take out debt to go to Stevens over the two SUNY schools. SB is know for STEM fields but it is also know to be more of a suitcase school. If she want the a full overall college experience at a good price, I’d consider Binghamton. If possible, I’d visit the two SUNY schools during accepted students days and then decide.
With no financial aid, cross Stevens off your list.
One indicator of Stony Brook’s commuter reputation is its main student parking lot. It’s the size of a small town, it’s jam packed during the day, and empty at night. I’m not commenting on whether this is good or bad, it’s just an indicator.
If you want to go to a school where most kids go home at night, then I’m sure Stony Brook will be fine for you. If you prefer a place where most kids gather at the student center or the dining halls or the dorms at night, Binghamton is probably better.
If it matters to you, I believe Stony Brook is more ethnically diverse.
Just curious, which school did you decide on? My DS has to make a decision and Stevens and SB are top on the list. Any info is appreciated.
I would say go to Stevens. They basically are known for engineering and come out with top salaries. IT is very rigorous i heard.
