i was contacted by a coach about maybe running at stevens and i was wondering about whether or not the school has a good reputation in the engineering/sciences world. obviously the coach gushed about its great relationship with various pharmaceutical/engineering companies but i'd like some more opinions. i know they're no harvard but any input about whether or not a stevens degree would be respected in the professional world?

Stevens has been discussed on CC before - try this thread:

My son and I toured there a few weeks ago, and it sounds like students are able to get great internship/job opportunities due to the proximity to NYC. Also, Stevens students can take classes at NYU.

Both of my cousins got their master's from Stevens about 15-20 years ago; one is now a stay-at-home mom but the other does very well as an environmental engineer.

I happen to live in Hoboken. Every city has its problems, but Hoboken is pretty cool. Lots of young professionals, coffee shops, best pizza in NJ, amazing waterfront parks, etc. We're getting a huge multiplex theater, too. The campus is high on a hill with sweeping views of NY city, which is only a ferry or train ride away. I walk around Stevens all the time and always feel safe.

wow thanks fireflyscout and gettinin!
Is the campus pretty? like old buildings, plently of grass, in other words not urban..

Stevens isn't well known but it is a great engineering school and pretty selective about admissions.

the campus isn't very large and isn't full of old buildings but it's not totally urban...there is grass and it's kinda pretty, andt he view of the nyc skyline is unbelievable. i know someone who just graduated and got a job with a great starting salary and got a patent before graduation.
I chose stevens and will be attending in the fall but majoring in physics, not engineering.
And based on my schedule, it's a very challenging courseload and from what i've heard employers know that and stevens grads do very well.
also if your SAT score is above 1400/1600, top 10% of class, and at least 3.7gpa you coukld qualify for their scholars program and get a bachelors and masters in 4 years.

the scholars program sounds really great.. thanks everyone!

It's not particularly pretty or ugly. . . it is very small, though. There are some nice green spaces on campus and I've come across kids playing volleyball outside. There's a definite feeling of calm up there, at least when I've been there.

There's also some really nice park space in Hoboken that you're pretty close to.
And seriously, I know it's just a view, but it's an amazing view of the Hudson River and NYC. That adds a lot of personality to the campus. You can even watch giant cruise ships leaving Manhattan on Sundays. I can't really tell you anything about the school academically (other than what I already have; I know it has a good reputation), but I would have no qualms about having it be my campus if I was still in college.
