@lovemyMTgirl - good catch, kitty cat!

I know this does not affect this year’s H.S. seniors, but for juniors applying for Fall 2015 and beyond - take a look at S’s/D’s PSAT score from October 2013. If it’s up around the 205 - 230 range (varies by state, and from year to year. Previous years’ cut-off scores can be found on the Nat’l Merit website), you may be looking at National Merit scholarship opportunities. Only a small percentage of students nation-wide qualify, but I’m curious if given our MTer’s interests and brain types perhaps they skew the percentage a little bit. There are different opportunities based on whether you are a finalist (announced February of senior year), or “merely” make semi-finalist, commended or achievement(?) (under-represented populations) level (all announced Aug/Sept of senior year). These scholarships tend to be more valuable at state schools (U of Arizona gives full tuition for in/out of state, WSU gives “free-ride” for commended level and above, CCM/U of Cincinnati “free-ride” for finalists, etc.), but there are some private/elite schools out there that participate in the program to varying degrees (CMU and U Mich do NOT). The award possibilities are often clearly laid out in the Admissions/Financial Aid/Scholarship web pages. Perhaps these schools are not your S’s/D’s first choice programs, but as VoiceTeacher pointed out, that leaves LOTS of wiggle room for summer intensives, semesters abroad - or the “luxury” of doing quality summer stock that perhaps does not pay well.

For parents of H.S. freshmen and sophomores who are looking ahead, pay attention to your kid’s “practice” PSAT taken in October of 10th grade year. If that score is around 200ish, seriously consider private tutoring over the summer after sophomore year for the test that “counts” in junior year (SAT/ACT prep classes may not do the job. Think school choir vs. private voice lessons). A few hundred dollars and “just one more” commitment added to an already over-booked schedule could be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars over four years. Don’t necessarily rely on your school counselor to know about how this works. If you think your S/D qualifies, you may have to “educate” your school’s staff. The initial notification of commended/semi-finalist status comes from the H.S. counselor/principal and there is an October deadline to turn in Nat’l Merit “application” from both the student and the school. Hopefully most schools are on top of this. Ours was not and we had to “chase it down”.

Thanks for noticing that! Here is the most current (I hope) with 26 schools!

If your student is a great student and will be in the running for academic awards, it is even more important to have all applications in by the end of October AND see if there is additional paperwork that must be filled out to be considered for scholarships. You don’t want to miss out because you miss a deadline or didn’t fill out a form!

Another consideration. Make sure you check your state and see if they participate in the Academic Common Market, Western Undergraduate Exchange, Midwest Student Exchange, etc. I know students at Coastal Carolina who are able to pay the in-state rate thanks to the ACM. The programs vary, so you have to do your research. But it’s worth taking a look.

I think some of these may need to be double checked? The direct costs for Baldwin Wallace conservatory for next year are listed on the website as $40,720. Note these are direct costs. Not total costs. But it may be different in the FA letters that were sent. Can anyone confirm? I also believe the Viterbo costs are direct costs, not total costs. Can anyone who received an FA letter from these schools confirm? remember total costs will also include estimates for things like books, travel and miscellaneous expenses in addition to tuition and fees, room and board. Make sure if you are putting a school’s costs on this list they are coming from actual FA letters sent this spring. And make sure you understand if they are direct costs or total costs as described at the top of the list. That way people can get the most accurate comparison. And to the rest of us, we need to remember to check and double check to make sure we understand the complete cost picture for each school.

The Viterbo number is from the Cost Estimate Worksheet they sent which includes their estimate of $1,000 for books but nothing for travel and personal expenses. I’ll change the number to direct costs.

Just checked our BW financial aid letter: Total costs are given as $40,720, broken down into Tuition, BW Jacket Express (board & books), BW Room, and Fees (which are listed as 0). I’ve changed the figure accordingly and listed it as (dc) since BW lumps books in with board.

I did a small happy dance today when I checked next year’s CCPA tuition and it has only gone up $500. $34,111, plus about $12,000 in room and board, depending on where you live and how much you eat. I don’t have a financial aid sheet with the other costs.

Sorry about the BW numbers but going off my D’s FA letter the only numbers that were listed were tuition, fall & spring double room fees and fall & spring BW Jacket Express with total charges listed at $38,318 before they started taking off D’s scholarships and grants. Wonder why out totals were off by $2400? Guess I’m going to have to call BW financial aide cause this school was one of the least expensive ($38K not expensive, HA!) so far!

Its OK we’ll still keep you around cellomom LOL

@ashleybashley, I think you were the one who posted the amount for Shenandoah? The financial aid letter we just received from SU shows a total cost of $43,066 (including Tuition, Technology Fee, IM Learning Fee, Student Services Fee, Room & Board, Applied Music Lesson per course (1/2 hr/piano or 1 hr), and Conservatory Fee. Just the Tuition + Room & Board totals $38,726, so I’m wondering where you got $41,116 for direct costs?

Finding information on Academic scholarships in each school’s website seems relatively simple to find since that is a universal topic that affects all students attending a university. However, if we truly try to narrow down the list of what schools my D should apply to based on our personal affordability, how do we find out what schools are the most generous with talent scholarships. Also, anyone remember which schools waive the app fee without a voucher from the school counselor, or let you audition without applying to the school first? We have a list of about 15 schools for the D to audition to right now, but that’s going to have to be trimmed down quite a bit… I need some of this information to make the “cuts”.
