Still confused about SAT II Subject Tests

I have read through a lot of these threads and stickies and they are very helpful. I am still a little confused by the whole SAT II Subject test recommendations though.

I know most Ivy and Ivy-like schools recommend or require 3 tests. What about other LAC or schools. I looked several up on College Board and many (Bucknell, F&M, VIllnova, Dickinson) did not say anything about SAT IIs. Is it imperative to take 3?

Is it better to take the tests in the area you are best in (In my S's case, Math/Science) or spread them out and have a history test in there too.

My son is in honors precalc as a sophomore and very gifted in math. When should he take the Math II test - next year after Calc AB?

Thanks for answering these basic questions!

3: It’s best to take the Math II Subject test right after precal, since the test does not include calculus. There is a slight chance of getting a question on limits, so he may want to look over those; but it is simple enough to learn in a couple of minutes. (Several questions can be missed for a 800 as well)
