Hey guys, I have gotten into UT Austin and Texas A&M College Station. I plan to study petroleum engineering and also minor is business administrations. I know it's past the deadline to accept, but I have already accepted to both colleges to give me some more time to think. I am from South Texas and live on a ranch, and everyone I know is a HUGE Aggie. My parents didn't go to the big state schools so I am very neutral and do not care about football at all. My personality is mixed; I love the country and the hard working mentality of ranchers but I also like the indie scene and I am very artsy since my dad is an artists. It's hard to decide where to go. I love Austin, it's very cultured and there is always something to do but all of my friends are going to A&M and I have family there already. UT has more museums and businesses set up. What I have heard is that A&M is one big family while at UT you're just a number, which makes sense since at Austin the students are put in a large city where at A&M the students are the only part of College Station, so much more notice goes to them Supposedly, aggies also get paid more in the future. I think UT has a better campus but A&M is where my roots are, since my family is big on agriculture. I feel that UT would be an adventure since I really only have 1 friend going there. My best friend (we've known each other since we were five) is going to A&M and also A&M gave me a large scholarship while UT gave me almost nothing. I know everyone says to go where you feel more comfortable and where you got more money but I feel that having an adventure and breaking the comfort zone builds character. I'm really torn where to go. Can anyone just clarify on any of my opinions and tell me your experiences, that would help alot. Thank You.

I stopped when I read “I plan to study petroleum engineering and also minor is business administrations.”

This SCREAMS “go to UT”. Sorry for not reading the whole post, I’m sure there’s more to it than just how good the programs are.

^ Agree. UT is the correct choice.

UT is better than A&M for both subjects.

Agreed^^

Anyone who tells you that students are the only part of College Station is seriously misleading you. I mean, I suppose that’d be true if you never left campus. It’s a whole city, not just the campus. I lived there for 10 years before I moved to Austin. It’s definitely smaller than Austin, but it’s not really some agricultural/pastoral place where everyone knows your name. It’s mostly an upper middle class family type town: lots of residential neighborhoods and chain restaurants. Other than the bars, everything shuts down at around 10pm. It’s pretty boring, actually. So unless you want to spend every weekend drinking at Northgate (the place with all the college bars), you’ll have to make your own fun. It has its up sides, too. No traffic, cheap cost of living, low crime.

So definitely go ahead and visit both cities if you haven’t already. You wouldn’t want to make such a huge decision based on false ideas about the environment you’ll be living in.

For the majors you are looking at UT is the better choice of the two. Aggies make more money? That would be a surprise to me and not what I’ve heard. Graduating from either school with a petroleum engineering degree will pay you well.

For environment that is something you have to decide. What is more important to you? Going where your friends go and a place that makes you comfortable or going somewhere new and making new friends and experiencing something you’re interested in?

Obviously there are pros and cons of each. In the end you will probably be happy at either.

To kldat1, would you happend to know the rankings for petroleum engineering for both schools? I’ve heard that’s UT is #2 on their website but everyone tells me A&M is #1 for petroleum but I do not know.

It depends on who you talk to and what they want to use for the ranking. The schools go back and forth as to who is #1 in petroleum engineering from outside rankings, inside rankings, student rankings, etc. Basically they are so close it really doesn’t matter. I know petroleum engineers from both schools and they always say their school is #1. School loyalty from both sides! UT and A&M are the top two in the country IMHO. Either one will provide a solid education in the field. UT did recruit Dr. Patzek away from UC-Berkeley to head their petroleum engineering department a couple of years ago. That was a big win for UT, again in my opinion.

So if you toss out the petroleum engineering factor since they are the basically the same then look at your number 2 criteria and see which school is better. If it is business they I would suggest UT. If it is location, environment, atmosphere then you have to decide on that since that is a personal choice.

A&M has a better program!!!

Also, I feel that you will like A&M more!! So pick A&M!!:)

UT Austin. Better city. Better school. Expand your horizons. This is a ut forum.

You decide:
TAMU vs UT-Austin
21:1 student to faculty ratio vs 18:1
1780 Avg SAT vs 1860 avg

65 vs #46

Both on same level for petroleum engineering
conservative vs liberal

False. You are just a number at both. This is the case at any big universities.

UT-Austin is more selective, has better reputation and is higher ranked for almost every major. UMich, UT-Austin, UWisconsin, UC-Berkeley, UIUC and UCLA are the top public state universities.
