My son is considering applying as a "Still Deciding" major, either in the Westphal School of Media Arts and Design or in the College of Arts and Sciences. Does anyone have experience with entering Drexel this way? I know Drexel has a lot of requirements--would coming in as "Still Deciding" make it impossible to graduate in the usual number of years? Are students able to get into the majors that they finally decide on, or do they find that they're closed out of them? He's not interested in Engineering or Business--I think any major he would consider would probably have one coop and a 4 year graduation rate, assuming he was able to take all the courses he needs in that time.

Hi Liam,
The following is an answer from a student at Drexel who came in as a music industry major and talks a little about how the undecided process might work.

“It really depends from major to major. I came in as a music industry because they don’t generally accept transfers. Meaning that it is difficult to get into the major if you didn’t begin in the major. Some other majors are closed like that. In other words, you have to apply for that major at the start, otherwise you won’t be able to get in easily. That’s my Westphal perspective.”

Coming into the school as “still deciding” should not change the number of years to graduation so long as the student stays on the right track and pursues it once they have decided on a major. He might have to take one or two summer courses but on co-op you can take one course and it is payed for by the school. I would also like to mention that while the 4 year track seems appealing because it is less time, the extra year may be helpful in allowing your son to explore a wide spectrum of interests to find what he really wants to go into.
If you have any other questions feel free to contact me in a message.

Thanks for your reply…Drexel’s website specifically states that Music Industry and Architecture aren’t possibilities for “Still Deciding” students to enter, and these aren’t majors he would try to get into anyway. Do you actually know of any “Still Deciding” students and whether the special programs they supposedly have for them (to help them decide on a major and career direction) are helpful?

From the people I’ve talked to in the program, I’ve only heard good things. They are ushered into the school and are allowed to experience a little bit of everything. From what I’ve heard, they are quite helpful.

Best of luck,
