We are in the same boat at my house. S is down to 3 schools - had been 4, but thankfully he ruled out 1 yesterday. He doesn’t even want to talk about it with us at this point, which is driving me crazy because I’m a spreadsheet kind of person, whereas he’s going by gut feel, I think. He’s deciding between Oregon State Honors College, University of Rochester, and University of Colorado/Boulder for engineering, all OOS for us.
@Leigh22 we are in the exact same boat. I’m SOOOOO ready for this to be over!!! Good luck to all. Keep telling myself, we are blessed to have two great choices that I think are great fits for my daughter
I thought mine was the only recalcitrant. Totally avoiding me the past few days.
Finally, eliminated two: Wake Forest, Boston College.
Still deciding between an apple, an orange, and a banana.
Vanderbilt, Michigan, Pepperdine - could they be more different?
If any of the decisions are for Engineering student… refer to “Engineering Majors” section (which somehow I did not know about during our own college hunt) - http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/engineering-majors/
We’ll take a drive on Monday to pick up swag for the Official Announcement. But she just clicked, committed, and paid the deposit!
@bloomfield88, I am so sorry but admittedly had to laugh at your dilemma. They are SOOO different. At least mine is trying to decide between two Jesuit schools of similar size, just very different climates and acceptance rates (BC and LMU). He already ruled out other acceptances and LMU stayed on his list due to a large scholarship and weather. Now it is the cause of our angst.
@2mrmagoo That’s okay. I confess, I laughed a little when I saw your dilemma was self-inflicted.
“Last week he was 100% sure, didn’t even want to make the last college visit we had arranged a trip to see. I insisted,…” Doh!
Mine is a little deeper too. Unless you definitely want your child to go there, never take a 7th grader to Pepperdine. It isn’t fair to the parent or the child. That trip actually stuck in my daughter’s mind all the way through middle school and high school.
Doh! is right. Completely self-inflicted.
I understand on Pepperdine. My son visited last year and it was one and done for him. He stood gazing out at the phenomenal view, mesmerized. It wasn’t until he learned about the required convocation that he started backing away. He has attended Jesuit schools and is quite comfortable with religion, so long as it is his choice. He ended up not applying.
Let us know what the verdict is…and hope you get one soon!
Ha! My best guess is her decision will be 1 minute prior to the deadline.
I’m guessing Boston College with yours. After all it was 100% prior. Just my guess though.
I ponder, question and wonder is this the right choice daily and probably will until she graduates and attains successful careerhood.
She has no reservations and has made up her mind/choice for months. Considering her acceptances she picked the least competitive college and their most competitive major. I will always wonder should have she picked Kenyon, Denison, UTA, etc over this school?
I will never know at least it is almost free and she will only be 4 hours away lol.
@2mrmagoo I’m finally down to your #! She is down to Michigan and Vanderbilt.
She actually spoke to compare and contrast those final three to get down to two. We have some progress.
One of my DDs was at this stage last year. She made herself a powerpoint with the pros and cons of each school. She didn’t even show it to us. Mapping it all out for herself brought her clarity.
@bloomfield88, we have a decision…BC! I’ll believe it once he finally commits online. He is telling his high school tomorrow. I think yours wll pick Vandy.
I think my son made his mind up tonight. It was Allegheny vs. Knox and he chose Knox. He was avoiding me for the last few days. I favored Allegheny a bit, since his interest is their strong suit (Environmental Science), but I think the gut feel led him to favor Knox. I even made a spreadsheet for him to rank each school, which he didn’t use. Ha! How do you get over the feelings of regret of your kid letting go of a school that you have an emotional investment in?
My D is still deciding between Gonzaga and Cal Poly Slo (closest to home). About $12,000 difference after merit aid, maybe a little less years 3 and 4 with the difference in off campus housing prices. Would require graduation with loans vs debt free. Fell in LOVE with Gonzaga at our first visit in the fall and then all over again when we went for admitted students weekend. She likes Slo a lot. She’s very aware that wherever she ends up will probably work out great but it’s hard to make that final decision. The list was at 4 till last week (eliminated Davis and Univ or Portland) so I guess we’ve make some progress. Not going to ask her again till Tuesday night, enough other people ask her all day long. She has all the facts she has to make the decision, heart vs brain vs gut…
Any advice/inputs would be appreciated.
Don’t wait until the very last moment. I can tell you a couple of a tech problem and internet problem heartaches.
@Theoden - Our S was down to two schools a few days ago…and chose Allegheny. You just never know. Congratulations to you son - and best wishes to him at Knox. Trust his decision and be excited with/for him!
@hermom1
Both are great schools. If my daughter had been admitted to Cal Poly we would have considered the OOS rate to attend.
My daughter had a similar choice between Western Washington and Manhattan College. I highly value the LAC/small college experience. However, even with a nice scholarship from Manhattan the 4 year difference was approx. $60k. For us, that was just too much money for comparable schools academically.
I would argue that Cal Poly May have a stronger caliber of student.
Son is still deciding, even though he really can’t go wrong with either option. Said he was pretty sure of his choice and was going to sleep on it last night. (Is it a bad sign that he woke up with a migraine this morning?! )
Look at http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/ and you can see all the students who are still deciding
