My entire summer has consisted of thinking about if I should transfer. It is pretty much driving me crazy. I'm thinking about transferring to Brandeis from Skidmore. I pay half tuition at Skidmore ($25000 instead of about 50000). I really like Brandeis and would prefer to go there. But I don't hate Skidmore and feel that I could go back there too. So is Brandeis that much better that it is worth the money? Or should I stay at Skidmore and make the most of it? I applied to transfer because students at Skidmore (at least the ones I met) did not seem too serious about academics and the academics weren't amazing or particularly challenging. But it has some good professors and I would be willing to seek them out. I'm considering majoring in psych and politics (and maybe some combination of philosophy and English minors). My parents can pay for Brandeis but it seems like they would be very reluctant to. They say it is my decision. any advice would be appreciated. I was hoping that by some stroke of luck someone familiar with both school might see this and be able to give an opinion.

It is up to you, of course ... but since you asked ... if you are not really sold on leaving Skidmore, I think you should stay. You can use the money you save for grad school. And if you get a fellowship for grad school, your parents can take a vacation with the extra bucks!

Seriously, I don't recommend transferring unless you have clear reasons for leaving. If the reasons for leaving outweigh the reasons for staying, then go. But if you aren't sure one way or the other, I vote for "stay."

Plus ... my D's friend was accepted for transfer at Brandeis but isn't going. They don't guarantee housing for transfers.

I got housing from the waitlist

Actually, I just found out my D's friend also got housing & will be going to Brandeis, after all. She is really looking forward to it!

The difference between D's friend & you is that she knows she definitely would rather be there than any other school. It's your call. If finances are not an issue, and if you think Brandeis would be better for you academically (and for your career), go for it. If you aren't sure, though, and you are lured more by the name than by anything tangible, you might want to consider staying put.

Good luck with your decision.
