I applied back in April and was eligible for financial aid. I decided after I applied for the Fall I would apply for Summer and got in at the last minute. Now it is almost time for school to start and no financial aid yet. The school says it is guaranteed to be there by August 11th. That's great if I don't lose my classes on August 10th. I wonder if I should click on complete registration and then financial aid will clear the balance owed on the 11th when the money gets into my account? Registration re-opens on August 12th but the classes I want(need) are full already. I am going to call and ask them Monday if the aid is not there yet. I was just wondering if anyone is experiencing the same kind of thing this year. I am told it is because of record numbers of high school graduates coming in this fall.

If the financial aid is “not there,” that means you must have outstanding requirements related to verification. Were you asked for additional information? Did you provide it? If so, when? I am a financial aid officer, and I receive complaints from students about their aid not being ready. When I look at their accounts, I often find they have been ignoring our requests for info. Some tell me they turned it in “a long time ago.” With 32,000 students, many of whom apply for aid, things can get lost. If you turned it in “a long time ago” and it still shows that it is not there, you need to turn it in again. If you don’t look at your school emails, you need to make sure you do so on a regular basis (forward to your personal account if you want) … students often say they don’t look at their school email, but that is how we communicate with them! That’s the purpose of having a school email address.

On the other hand, if you have done everything that was asked & you still don’t have an aid package, there may be a glitch that no one will ever know about if you don’t let someone know. Once in awhile, I will find that a FAFSA got stuck somewhere & never made it into our system. Sometimes it is because the student made a mistake (last name where first name should be - nickname instead of formal name - etc). Other times it is just a random thing. Be sure to find someone who can look at your account & tell you what is going on.

If you did turn in documents that were requested, was it within the last few weeks? My school takes about 2 weeks to get the documents into the system, and then it can take a week or so before it gets on a report that assigns it to an aid officer.

And another very important question: Did you fill out a 2009-10 FAFSA???

Have you contacted the school to find out how they handle this?

I know at my daughter’s school, as long as we’ve done all the necessary paperwork and taken the steps to accept the aid offered, we don’t need to worry about the balance due…it will automatically clear when the aid is released at the end of September.

Filled out FASFA first thing. I have an award letter for the Pell and loans. The loan site says school is supposed to be verifying the loan and it is all completed on my end. I signed off on all that on June 15. When I went before the 20th of July they said everything was all there and paperwork was done and should be in before the 11th of August.

I have been in and out of the financial aid office since the end of May when my summer classes started. I thought for a minute they might be getting tired of my questions. Do I have everything I need? Did I do this correctly? Where do I do my prescreen and sign my promissory note? Did I do that correctly? They never send an email to me. I emailed them last wek still no reply from them. When I would ask they would hunt down my file and check and say everything is there. One time they took a long time to find my file, then they told me the taxes were not there. They were in there she just overlooked them. I said there they are and she was like oops my bad. We laughed a little.

I went last week and and they said guaranteed by the 11th of August. I already have pre-registered, however if I do not complete registration on the 10th I will lose my classes as that is when registration ends. The money is due on the 11th. Registration reopens on the 12th but the classes I picked are already closed. I will have to call them tomorrow and ask them if I can complete registration and if Pell and loans will pay out on the 11th or not. I hope so as I am not looking forward to sitting in a student center twiddling my thumbs for 3-4 hours waiting on my next class. I will if I have to it didn’t kill me this summer, it just seems like a waste of time to me.

Go ahead and do your registration as planned. Since they are saying everything is ok multiple times then I wouldn’t worry about it.

I’m confused…what are you waiting for? Are you anticipating additional aid beyond what was in the letter you received?

No I am not waiting on more aid. I am still waiting on them to post to my account the aid I was already approved for, they say they are doing so many a day and I just haven’t come up yet I guess. They are saying the delay is because they are on four day work weeks due to budget cuts and more students coming in the fall than they anticipated.

I am being patient and not losing my cool. My husband however says I need to go down there and get mean. I say that is not the way, it will get resovled. It just might not be the way I want it, but it will be okay. I am just a little antsy, you know. :)

Okay, I’m curious. Did everything get done on time?

I went down there the first of the week and they couldn’t find my file. They finally found it and nothing had been done because it was in the wrong place. Finally today everything is done and I am registered with classes paid for. I will go get my books either today or Monday. If you don’t gently push them sometimes they will not get it done. Another lady threw a fit and her’s is still not done.

So glad you went down and got it sorted out. We have found that when problems arise going and parking our rears in the relevant office seems to do the trick without having to resort to fit throwing.

I’m glad it worked out for you. Yes, sometimes it does help to go in & talk to someone. Please be nice, though! :)
