we have 6 out of 46 going to brown

laurenemma - terrible financial aid, but I still desperately want to go. Although at this point my father is pressing me to stick with UC Berkeley; I would only have to pay about $8,000 per year.

aidnked - UC berkeley is also a very prestigious school though, paying 8000 a year to go there is quite a good deal/investment in life, don't u think?

There's a kid at my school doing the exact same thing! Only it's Yale, and our school is really small, making it really unlikely that both of us will be chosen. Grrr!

JJ03 - Yes it is an incredible deal as far as education goes. But there are things about Berkeley's social and physical environment that do not sit well with me.

@aidnked: so brown's finaid is that bad? I thought that they're committed to giving admitted students all the aid they need. Anyway, do you have to pay like 15K or even more?

I heard that if Brown has reviewed your file and bypassed your application in favor of someone else on the waitlist, you will receive a rejection letter in the mail. True? Has anyone received one?

just.a.thought - to make a long story short my parents are divorced and i live primarily with my mom, she makes $42,000/year. But since Brown bases its financial aid on both of my parents, my dad, who is a doctor, enormously drives up my family contribution to the point where i would be paying $40,000/year. My mom cannot afford this, and my dad is not willing to pay this.

aidnked - send them a letter outlining your situatioin. have you tried that yet?

You definitely should discuss your situation with Brown, probably by phone rather than letter. Do you have a college counselor at your school who could help with this? I suspect that the parent who CAN contribute but WONT is not uncommon, especially when there is a divorce and a non-custodial parent involved. I dont know what Browns flexibility is in dealing with this situation, but you should let them know whats going on and how desperately you want to attend.

Although Brown and Cal are both superb schools, they are totally different in countless ways its impossible to say that one is better, but your college experience will be very different at one compared to the other. If Brown is where you want to be, you might also ask them about the possibility of transferring in later. If you could reduce the total cost of your education by doing the first year or two at Cal (I assume you have a Regents or other merit award there) would your dad relent? Would you be able to work during the summers and save something to contribute to those years? Hearing how dedicated you are to attending, even if you cant do it next year, perhaps Brown might be able to come up with a way to help you.

You havent mentioned what you are planning to do after college (if you know). But if you are planning to attend medical or law school, finishing college debt-free (or nearly) becomes a larger consideration.

Good luck to you whatever you decide, and keep us informed.

Hello all, has anybody heard of the second round yet? I'm wondering when will Brown mail out decisions to the 2nd (and maybe last) batch???

since the commitment cards for the first round aren't due untill the 31st, I wouldnt expect to hear before june 6th

the name WAITlist certainly is not deceiving... wait... wait... wait

It's so incredibly worth the wait.

The letter from Brown finally arrived today in a thin white envelope. I knew what was inside. To Brown's credit, it was a very nice rejection letter. Given the stats, getting off the waitlist was always a long shot. Their message was a good one: Where you attend college is far less important than what you do with the opportunities presented while you are there. So be it. Barnard awaits! I'll miss reading these threads. Good luck to the rest of you.

I'm very sorry for that sad news. Did anyone else recieve similar news?

Barnard is an amazing school. I'm sure you will take great advantage of the opportunities presented to you there. Does anyone know if there is still room to be accepted off the waitlist?

hey eschreib, sorry to hear about the sad news.
what was the date on that letter?

good luck to all those on the waitlist

I got the same letter as eschreib, and amazingly I'm not too upset. I'm happy going to Swarthmore, and I think had I gotten into Brown, it just would have caused too much confusion too late in the game. Plus, I was talking to a kid orignially from my HS who just finished up his sophomore year at Brown, but his first at the school since he had transferred there from a lower-ranked LAC. He was such an arrogant jerk, bragging about all his accomplishments and his research (he's pre-med), and how he "dropped Orgo because he knew he wasn't going to get an A in he class." He just seemed to be obsessed by the fact that he was at Brown that it made me sick. So this really turned me off of Brown, even before I came home and saw the final letter...
