Still out here waiting for the Appointment...

My goodness- What a week. So sorry for your daughter go navy81. Is she OK? The 'no' is no fun. But what a fabulous option to have USAFA, she has to be proud of her accomplishments. Go get'em Girl!!

bman26- Very sorry for your letter too. Tough time of year. The ROTC plan is a definite winner! CGA may come through next. Best of luck to you in all your endeavers.

Thanks CelticClan, she is fine. Of course, there's always disappointment whenever you've been pursuing something for so long, but, she (and we) are all convinced this is the right opportunity for her. It's interesting how opportunities present themselves and things work out for the best. Especially when you couldn't even have imagined the end result when the process was started! Continued best wishes to all. I guess I'll have to sit in the end-zone at this year's Air Force-Navy football game in Annapolis between the Midshipmen and Cadets so that I can appropriately give my support to both Academies!

We received the 'nasty' thin letter today too. Ouch! But the journey has taught us a lot. We've had dreams and been places we never thought possible. We'll see what the future holds. Thank you for your great advice and encouragement over the year.

My son's friend from school received the thin letter today. He's bummed, but he's not going down without a fight. We thought for sure he was in.

My son recieved his thin letter while we were on vacation. He is going to accept the prep program for usma

Received the thin letter (no wait list, no Foundation...) on 4/13 - For what is is worth....

QQQ - No waivers needed
2 Nominations - Senator & Congressman
NASS
CVW
USNA Lacrosse Camp
Eagle Scout - Senior Patrol Leader
4 Varsity Letters
Varsity Team Captain
ACT - 29 (28M, 26V)
3.4 GPA
Beta Club
School Club Officer
Top 20% Class Rank - 100% Senior Class going to College

I encourage everyone who got the thin letter to try again. Be so tenatious that the Candidate Guidance Office starts referring to you as "The Boomerang - He just keeps coming back!"

I knew a guy who went in after spending THREE YEARS at Purdue, so it CAN be done.

Question is...... Just how bad do you want it? ;)

Good luck! :)

Two nomination, NASS, CVW, and USNA Lacrosse Camp does't add anything to your package. Your class rank / GPA looks like the weak link. Reapply next year if your are serious about attending the Naval Academy; second-time applicants get a lot of points. Also, try to get that math score above 30.

How much do unsolicited reference letters weigh in the process? None are asked for. But my understanding is they sit in the file and can make a difference. Any advice?

Well......

I had several, and from some pretty potent people (Rudy Giuliani, George Steinbrenner, and a few others). Did they help? I honestly don't know, but they obviously didn't hurt as I was sent to NAPS (a perfectly reasonable result considering my lousy first two years in HS).

My opinion is that unless someone who KNOWS can PROVE that such letters can actually HURT you, then there is nothing to lose by sending them in.

That said, a few warnings...

No one appreciates a "canned" recommendation letter. Make sure that whoever is writing you one knows you well and expresses that in their letter. It's got to come across as completely sincere and well-meant (as opposed to just being sent to secure a vote, for instance), or it very well MAY hurt you.

Also, make sure that the person writing it has either a) some serious position which by its nature gives them credibility to judge character, or b) is writing from the viewpoint of close PROFESSIONAL association with you. Teachers, community leaders, job bosses, etc., weigh far better than Uncle Joe who just happens to be former Navy.

This is advice based on my experiences back when I went through. I strongly recommend that if they do not post here on their own, that you actively seek out our resident BGO's and ask them directly.

Best of luck. :)

My son was:
QQQ no waivers
principle nom
6 Varsity Letters
4 years team caption
Nationaly ranked swimmer
glowing letters of recomendations
ACT: math 26 Eng. 25 ( I think this is what killed him)
4.06 GPA
NHS
top 10% of Class

No offer of appt, wait list, NAPS or NROTC from Navy

Offer of prep program from ARMY, AROTC without ever appying.

his response: GO ARMY!

^^^^^
Since your son was a principal nominee, he should have received an appointment if he was triple qualified. Principal nominees only have to meet the minimum requirements to obtain an appointment. The ACT English score of 25 was probably the killer; that score translates to less than 600 on the SAT scale. Did your son receive a letter stating that he was scholastically qualified?

he was found scholasticallly qualified very late, only after he took the last ACT. he never recieved a letter but was told by his RO that he was competing for a direct appt. Son is very happy with the offer from USMA and will be attending Marion Military Institute Next year. they have 100% appointment rate to WP. He is wait listed for WP and may still recieve an appt there. We trust that God has provided the path that he is meant to take. Apparently that is not Navy.

Well it sounds like Navy's loss is an Army gain. Still, if I understand this process somewhat (I'm convinced only God understands it all), that no matter when in the process, those who are 3Qed and then receive a principal nomination are IN barring injury, felony, or flunking last semester calculus?

I would be calling the USNA Admissions office if I were you! :)
Who knows, it could just be some forgot to check a box along the way and a call could fix that. One must "Prepare for Rain". Good Luck!

I must agree with above. If you recieve a "Principal" nomination and are 3Q than you are "packing for plebe summer". That is an exact quote from the Head of BGO's for our area. Again I also agree that ACT score may have been the kicker. Same BGO told our son if he didn't get min score of 26 on both Math and Eng there was nothing they could do for him. If this is your dream don't give up!!! A single year in college could make all the difference.

so i got an email from my RO saying that i was on the "wait list" for NAPS, I know that there is a wait list for USNA but does anyone know what the odds are for someone on the wait list for NAPS is?

i was on the wait list for naps.... then i got off by retaking my cfa. you should ask your ro what you can do. she told me as long as i got my mile time down i was in. pretty simple.

good luck.

^^^^ So, does that mean you are currently on the waiting list for USNA?

^^^^ Im gonna assume that means theyre in NAPS, when i took the cfa i did really good so im pretty sure its because i have some bad test scores.
