My Mom called PSU today because I have been unable to log in to the website and check my application status. In addition to hopefully straightening out the website problem - she said the admissions counselor said that they have sent out some acceptances to very high end applicants for University Park - but they are now in a holding pattern until December 1 - the deadline for preferred admissions. Once they have the pool of early applicants complete, they will assess the pool and made their next round of decisions. Apparently they expect to mail the next round before Christmas. At least I'm in the pool - ha! Come on in the water's fine. So go ahead and relax your stomach muscles - all you co-waiters out there - the turkey will finish digesting that much easier. GGT

But being in the secondary pool doesn't necessarily mean you got accepted.

Nope - there are no guarantees - for any of us on any outstanding applications - there is some randomness to the whole process. That's one of the things that our guidance counselor has stressed and why they usually won't make predictions. If you go to the scattergrams that Taxguy posted the link for at one (very competitive) Maryland high school - you can see that there are people with lower numbers accepted while people with higher numbers rejected - there's factor X - a collective variable for all the other pieces of our applications. BUT - I'd rather be in the pool waiting to be considered than get the news that Melon is trying to work with at this point. Being out of state with a 1260 and 3.6 weighted means I have a shot at it - but it all depends on the qualifications of those in the pool with me - but at least I have a shot and thats all I can ask for. I go to a private school where I have to have a 93 average in a class to get an A- and we have no gut classes - like some of my friends who go to area public schools and they can "independent study" as a teacher's aid and get an A for running paper's between teachers all semester. I've worked hard for my B+ average with half of my classes being honors or AP and I hope when PSU looks at my app, that they see those intangibles and the X factor is to my advantage! Good luck to everyone still in the pool! GGT

I don't know if this changes things, but they posted this on my status page today...

"As of 11/25/2005, we have reached a decision regarding your application. You will receive this decision in the mail."

Maybe that was the last of this round's apps and they just updated the status pages late.

Beth - what were your stats like?

UW GPA: 93 (3.8 maybe?)
SAT: (first try)
CR - 700
M - 710
W - 800
TOTAL = 1410/2210

SAT IIs:
Spanish - 770
Writing - 750
Math IC - 700
Bio - 560

AP USH - 4
Taking 5 APs this year.

ECs: Good leadership positions...managing editor of newspaper, pres of NHS, started my own tutoring club.

Recs were very good. Oh, and I'm a white female from NY. Let me know if you want more specifics. :)

you could probably get into the Honors College Beth.

Agreed, you have a good chance.

Beth, you're definitely in. 99% guaranteed!

According to my school's scattergram, everyone was accepted that applied. My GC told me its a safety and I'm not even a strong applicant. I don't know if its because of my school's connection with them or what, but according to the scattergram 2.5 and 1000 SAT's got in all the way to 4.0 and 1400 SAT's. Only 2 people got rejected and they had 2.3 / 800 (WOW) and 2.3 / 1120. So keep your heads up. And keep in mind - this is for University Park alone - out of 56 applicants 54 got accepted.

Beth - I betcha the post man is gonna have good news for you as soonas they catch up with the holiday backlog - those are great stats - congrats in advance! GGT

parikhs - are you in state or out of state? Now you're not one of those peeps who thinks a 750 is awful are you? Do yo umind sharing your stats that your GC was referring to? Our GC is never there and we have to keep reminding the school to send our stuff - we get no counselling whatsoever - its a joke - so we're on our own to figure out which schools are reasonable and which are impossible. Thank goodness for US News and Princeton Review or I'd have no clue. GGT

No...i'm not an overachiever and have less than stellar stats - 1260 (M/V) 1940 - and 3.6 UW GPA. According to my school's stats a lot of people get accepted from here so I'm not sure if its just my school or what. I live in NY and go to a prep school. Its a math/safety for most applicants from my school unless they have like a 2.3 GPA and <1100 SAT's

Okay thanks - I'm in a private prep as well - and it sounds like we're in a similar "boat" - very few kids from my school apply there - lacrosse is a BIG thing here in Maryland - only 100 kids per class and last year 12 kids got Div I scholarships to play LAX - so many of the kids go where they can play - and many go south to follow the lax $. I am remaining optimistic - hoping I get some "Christmas Cards" within the next few weeks that start out with "Congratulations!" - would be right up there next to Peace on Earth and Good Will to Men.

yah I hear you man...my ED school :-X which I doubt I'll make with my below avg stats. Does your school have stats on previous applicants / schools etc.? Anyway GL man.

Nope - the only thing we really see are the schools kids actually accept and the scholarship money they get from them - there's a list in the graduation program - thats it.

But with the lacrosse thing happening - a lot of that money is athletic scholarships - we have kids who could make things happen academically at bigger schools like Penn and Maryland - and they wind up going to James Madison, or George Mason, or Longwood or Va Tech so they can keep toting their sticks. I started playing lax when I was 8 years old - but when I hit varsity in high school, I played year round - including summer and fall ball and absolutely hated the attitudes of "me first" and all the egos and jockying for press and such and the coaches who were bizzare - just wasn't a team sport anymore - not fun - so I quit and got certified to ref since i love the game. Kept playing bball and hockey cause they aren't as high profile and nobody rates ego-busting scholarships from them so they are just plain fun. Hope I can play club sports in college - but not interested in a full time job of playing for a college varsity team - too much time and stress.

I'm gonna have my hands full pulling down a decent college GPA so I can get into dental school - oh yeah - just what I need - another round of standardized tests in 2 years and another round of waiting and wondering if I can get in - but I've wanted to be a dentist since forever - and I know I can make it happen - may be in a third world country - but I will find a way! Ha!

Good luck with your ED school - when do you hear?
GGT

hey GGT what area of Maryland are you in?

thanks guys! i did apply to schreyer but who knows, they're so selective.

good luck, and is PSU your first choice and/or where are you applying in addition to PSU.

i applied ED to university of virginia. if i don't get in i'm also applying to georgetown, unc, tufts, upenn, william & mary, middlebury, texas, and dickinson.

penn state is probably #6 or so on my list but if i get in schreyer it will definitely be up higher. maybe i'll see some of you all next september, who knows.
