april 1 was an unforgettable day in my life. I received consecutive rejections from NYU, Cornell, and then Columbia respectively. Sure, it tore me apart at first and I felt useless. But my friend assured me that I can be happy no matter what college I attend. However I still would like to know why I got rejected from NYU. this is where i actually had hope of getting in.

I think your volunteer work is great but your senior course load is way too light. Only two AP’s? Your EC’s aren’t great with the exception of your volunteering.

hey buddy, admissions offices are as arbitrary as ever nowadays, there are a LOT of factors to take into account when admitting people. just because one college rejects you, that doesnt mean youre incompetent or anything. you should NEVER take it as an insult if you were rejected from a school. that’s why you apply to more than one! even if you are highly qualified, the admissions officers might want to see a little something more in someone else. there are a lot of things you can’t change, and the decision is out of our hands unfortunately.

but i think that you are a highly qualified student, and lots of colleges would jump at your great scores! and remember, wherever the destination, you will always find happiness! that’s what i tell myself, ive been rejected to plenty other colleges xD

Unfortunately with a school as competitive as NYU, every student is qualified/over-qualified. I believe that you truly need something to set you apart in the admissions process, in order for them to get to notice you over all the other applicants. So, although there may be a slightly less qualified applicant than you, they may have had something special about themselves (or advertised themselves better), so they went with that applicant.

You’ll do fine in whatever school you go to. I know how upsetting it is to be declined because I went through the same thing on Thursday, but just keep your head up because it is you who makes your education and not the college. The college simply facilitates.

^ CAS is one of the harder schools to get into (Steinhardt, Gallatin and SCPS are easier). Personally, I know lots of people with better stats who were placed into LSP or rejected outright.

@jazzindy - Sorry about the rejection. You have good grades, but your SAT is about average for NYU and below average for Columbia. Your EC’s show you joined a bunch of clubs, no leadership or anything that stands out. But admissions is really arbitrary and it’s nothing you should take personally. NYU just gets a ton of applications because of its location (everyone wants to be in Manhattan) so they have to reject qualified people sometimes.

It’s definitely true college doesn’t make the individual. There are hundreds of colleges in this country where you can get a good education and for a lot cheaper than NYU. With your stats, you’ll definitely get accepted somewhere just as good, if not better.
