is Georgetown generous with Financial Aid. I am on the higher end of the income bracket but my EFC was about 20,000 less than the cost of attendance at georgetown. should i have hope if i am accepted. Or will Georgetown see that i am more capable to afford the school than other students and give me nothing.

I’d categorize them as less of a financial aid school personally. They are private. Also, a lot of schools guarantee to meet your full “demonstrated need”, but I don’t think Georgetown does.

Yeah the georgetown website said that they meet the persons full FA need but i mean plenty of other people that apply really cant afford it but idk. One can only hope right??? :)

That’s true! Fingers crossed for you! And myself too!!

Georgetown says it meets 100% of need, but that includes loans. That’s we’re they could get you.

We were pleasantly surprised with the aid offer freshman year. It was within a few hundred dollars of the aid package from Northwestern University where he was also admitted. Sophomore year was even better as they recognized some significant medical expenses we had that year and actually submittad a change to FAFSA that reduced our EFC and increased their grant. They did include the $5,000 federal loan in their freshman package and about $3,500 for this year. Otherwise it was our EFC and they covered the rest with their own grant/scholarship.

Last year, my son did not apply to Georgetown, even though he had a chance of getting in.

It was just too pricey for us, and I did not see Georgetown ever mentioned in any article or post as a school that was very good for financial aid. In fact, I remember seeing the opposite.

Yeah, the value is most likely not too great. Not like state school for $3,000 per year tuition…oh well.

Uh…take that offer any time you can get it. A year of tuition at my local community college (just tuition, excluding any required fees, for 30 credits) would be $3,720. Tuition and mandatory fees (excluding room and board) at my state flagship would be just a bit over $8900, and between $8000 and $8800 at most other public colleges and universities in my state. In-state, of course.

Yeah I was really lucky to get a scholarship. I wasn’t even considering the school till the scholarship, but now…

yeah i also got into a school that cut the COA in half I dont want to go to that school as much as georgetown but money talks…

I think Georgetown is on par with other comparable private colleges in terms of its financial aid. My D received essentially the same aid package from Wellesley and Georgetown.

That’s reassuring! My impression has been that Wellesley is really good with aid.

Georgetown is excellent for financial aid and I have no idea why some of you are saying that it isn’t. They absolutely meet 100% of need and they were actually the most generous school I was accepted to (beating out about 5 other elite schools that promised “full need met” by between $1200-2000 per year each). The one thing I have heard though (from a friend) is that they’re somewhat less generous for those with relatively high assets and relatively low incomes, but they’re especially good for relatively low assets and relatively high incomes.

Either way though, they’ll meet 100% of your demonstrated need and, if accepted, you will almost certainly be able to afford to come here. That doesn’t mean it’ll be the cheapest option of course (your local state school may be much cheaper, for example), but Georgetown will offer a generous financial aid package that will enable you to come here if you so choose.

Did anyone get a FA award letter yet for the 2013-14 school year? My DD got accepted EA, but we still haven’t gotten anything regarding FA.

I believe those come out with the RD. I may be wrong

We were on campus yesterday and were told that EA FA packages get mailed Friday.

So now that the financial aid packages have gone out, what are opinions?
I was pleasantly surprised by ours although it includes loans and work study. For what it’s worth, it was $2800 better than the NPC number.

Mine was better than the calculator estimate.

If you find it difficult to understand why Georgetown would be considered stingy, it is because Georgetown probably hasn’t asked you to borrow thousands of dollars in order pay their tuition. It is not just Georgetown that has this expectation. It seems endemic to our time that it is acceptable to borrow in order to afford. Sometimes I get the impression that borrowing is almost a patriotic duty. Maybe to your financials are strong enough on paper to make heavy borrowing an option. Or, maybe the cost of borrowing is not a problem for you.

Like I said Georgetown is similar to other schools in their claim of 100% affordability. Still, the claim is pure marketing – sounds great!
