Sorry to all applicants who are trying to figure out if you made the interviewing process, and congratulations to those who did. But this is a question for current students, parents, and maybe even professors.

My son, a freshman, is working with a professor on a possible research project that he would work on during the summer. He's just finalizing the proposal this week. His professor doesn't know anything about funding, but I noticed there's an application for stipends. Does this sound like a project that entitles him to a stipend? What is involved in getting a stipend, other than the application? How many are granted each year? What else should he know about this process?

I am also in the process of searching for stipends for summer research. There are several possibilities that I know of. If your son’s research is in biology, then there is always the SURF program (Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship). However, the first part of that application is due tomorrow.

I have also heard that one may apply to the career center for stipends if you have a legitimate summer internship. I’m not very sure of the application process, but I have been told that they rarely turn anyone down. Naturally, the catch is that it might not be a whole lot of money…

Hope this helps.

For research, you should go the Undergraduate Research Office (located in Umrath, you can go online and make an appointment with an advisor). There are grants you can apply for to get research funded, but a lot of them have deadlines around April, so hurry!
I don’t think the Career Center funds research projects.

The OUR only funds the research if it’s outside of the biological sciences. If your research is at all related to biology or BME, you have to apply through the SURF program.
