Stockwell

So I got a triple in stockwell (even if requested coed) and i was just wondering if anyone had any info on it.

how are the rooms?

and how far is the dorm from classes in central campus?

Madonna lived in Stockwell, not that it matters. But it is a pretty nice dorm from what I have been told.

The location is excellent. It is roughly a 5 minute walk from the Chem Building and within a 10 minute walk from Angell Hall and the major libraries of Central campus.

You will not have to walk more than 15 minutes to get to any class, and that's assuming you take Econ classes at Lorch Hall or Business classes at the new Business building when it is completed next fall.

Plus, if you like working out, you have the CCRB (Central Campus Recreational Building) within a 3 minute walk.

The Union would be within a 10-minute walk, as would State Street and South University Street, all of which are major hangouts for undergrads.

Same with a daugher; she wanted co-ed and ended up at Stockwell. What is the bathroom situation there?

Stockwell is right next to the CCRB...if I would have lived there freshman year I would still be in great shape. (Being surrounded by all girls probably would have helped)

I lived in Stockwell as a freshman...um, a few years back. ;) Same situation, preferenced coed, but assigned there by the U. It's the best location of the Hill dorms and, back then, the food was the best (of the worst) of U housing. We even had steak dinners once a month. It felt like a coed dorm in the dining hall with all the meal transfers by guys. First roommate assignment was awful, but switched to another room on my floor after 1st semester...an easy process if need be. Various room types and community baths...which wasn't so bad given it's an all-female building (and cleaned by the housekeeping staff). Good security for that reason too. Beautiful, stately Tudor with a great sun deck where we'd study for our finals in the spring. If my rising junior D chooses to attend Michigan, I'll be recommending that she preference the female dorms for their great locations on Central campus.

so will we need to take the bus to get to central?

No, the Hill area is just an extension of Central campus. Stockwell, the closest Hill dorm to the heart of Central campus (called the Diag), is an easy walk to most of the academic buildings/libraries as stated in Alexandre's post above.

stockwell is AWESOME. i was hesitant about living there at first because i thought it would just be estrogen-overload but im SO glad i got over that phase.. location is GREAT.. it is literally riGHT next to ccrb.. i lived on the first floor so it took me less than a minute to get to the gym which was great.. food is fine and as mentioned before, alot of guys come to eat there for lunch and dinner because it's close to central.. stockwell is closest to the chem building and dennison (5 minute walk), while the furthest place i had class was in angell hall (approx a 11 minute walk for me)

dorm is probably one of the cleaner ones on campus (partly because there arent any guys living there to stink up the place) and bathrooms are definitely cleaner and better taken care of.. i really liked the showers because up in bursley where i lived first semester, you basically had a shower and a curtain so you would have to dry off/put on clothes where its wet.. but stockwell has an additional "drying area" with each shower so more room to do whatever.

rooms are of good size (bigger than barbour, newberry, or markley for sure) and are especially bigger on the 4th and 5th floors. policeman comes by every night and sits by the front desk / walks around to make sure everything is going well.. the place is on teh quiet side compared to bursley or markley, but i felt very safe because of the security..

one annoying thing is if you have guests who are guys (ie: father, boyfriend, etc), they have to go to the male designated bathroom on the second floor.. the rules are made very clear that no male should enter the girls bathroom on the floor and if you're caught you will get into trouble.. the guys bathroom on the second floor has showers and stuff so its not a worn-down place or anything, they just put really want people to respect the fact that the bathroom should only be used by girls..

BEAUTIFUL dorm (many claim it to be the most beautiful on campus) and i actually chose to live there again next year over any of the other dorms.. HIGHLY recommended and dont be worried about being in a single-sex dorm at all.. you'll have a good experience, no doubt about that :)

^^Sounds like not much has changed over the years. Security presence in the lobby, special men's bathroom facilities, VERY clean dorm. After 10pm, we even had to meet guys at the front door and escort them upstairs. Quieter than the coeds, but it was nice to not have to go to the library or a study lounge every night to get work done. I lived on the 5th floor and had an ENORMOUS double room first semester. For roommate reasons, I moved down the hall into what was called a converted single (now called economy doubles, I believe) with another girl on my floor who also had to escape her u-assigned roommates in her triple. Even that smaller economy room was about the size of the standard rooms I saw in several of the coed dorms.

As the poster said above, Stockwell is a great option and the all-female aspect actually becomes a positive once you start visiting friends who live in the coeds, which can look like war zones after a weekend of partying.

Our daughter has been in Stockwell the last two years, Freshman year in a double and last year, a triple. The triple had plenty of room with one bed lofted and the other two as bunk beds. Her and her roommates liked the triple so much they signed up for the same room for next year.

wow sounds awesome.

and im really happy about the location. :)
