My S has been accepted to Stony Brook and people have been saying that Stony Brook is a commuter college where kids mostly go home for the weekends. Is this true? Are you a commuter or do you normally stay on campus during the weekends? My worry is that my S will be staying on campus during the weekends and no one will be there. Especially since 1st and 2nd year students cannot have cars on campus.

Can you please help ease my worrying mind?

No worries, gemini18. My son is currently a junior at Stony Brook. While it’s true the campus does empty out during weekends, there are plenty of students who don’t go home. We’re two hours away, and my son will come home once a month if his schedule allows. His roommates and friends rarely go home. And there are plenty of international students who don’t, either. As for transportation, there are shuttle buses that will take you to the mall and other stores. There’s even an LIRR station on campus. And unless it’s changed, your son can have a car on campus when he amasses 57 credits. Some kids come in with AP and college credits, so it can easily be by sophomore year.

Thanks. I just don’t want it to be a “ghost town” on campus saturdays and sundays. Who knows, maybe that’s a good thing. A time to decompress and relax, maybe even do some work. My son will be coming in with AP credits so who knows how quickly he can bring his car. We currently live in FL with a possibility of us relocating back to NY. How are the sporting events at school? My son is a big sports fan.

The only sports my son follows are basketball and baseball. I think those are the two big ones on campus. Possibly football and lacrosse, too, but he doesn’t go to the games. He spends most of his weekends sleeping late, doing assignments, laundry, hitting the gym or playing video games with his roommates.

On campus our most popular sports are Football, Basketball, and Lacrosse. The games are usually packed!

During the weekends a lot of different events take place, in the past we’ve had movie nights and carnival style events, as well as laser tag. We have a large population of out of state and international students that stay on the weekends.
