I have strongly been considering SBU for next year, but I'd be staying there full time. Is it true that a ton of people leave on the weekends? Would it be lonely/boring/weird to stay throughout the weekend? Any experience is appreciated, I was really looking forward to going to Stony Brook. Thank you!

Many years ago it was definitely like that - don’t know if it still is. But my friend (from NJ) transferred after sophomore year because all of her Long Island friends were disappearing on the weekend. She was all alone in the dorm. I hope it has changed.

I go home every thursday and so do some of my roommates but i always hear about a lot of events and parties going on during the weekend

Some people leave. Most people don’t. Stony Brook has more than 10,000 residents (the largest residential campus of the the State University of New York system) so even if 30% of the student body leaves on the weekend (which is probably an exaggeration in my experience) you still have a solid 7000+ students on campus. I never had a problem with kids leaving. My roomie used to go home most weekend, but I had a ton of friends that didn’t. I was able to enjoy campus life even without the 20-35% of kids that aren’t around…

CollegeKid90 is correct. There are some people who go home but also a large amount that don’t (for example, international students, out of state students, students from upstate NY, etc). Different organizations always have events going on, like dinners, balls, movie nights, and other fun activities. You just need to put yourself out there, meet people that will stay as well, and have fun with it. My freshman year a group of us would stay on the weekends and play RockBand in someone’s suite. It’s really what you make of it!
