From looking at the GRE rankings for computer science, as well as the spreaded rumors of SBU's excellent pre-med program, I have to ask.

Is it a mistake to go to Binghamton over Stony Brook for science? I understand Binghamton's SOM is among the best in the nation, but can it even compare to SBU for the sciences and engineering?

the opportunities for science/engineerig is way better at Stony Brook. Brookhaven/Cold Spring Harbor. Nothing remotely comparable at Binghamton.

Yeah, but is the rumored unhappy campus worth it? I mean, a lot of people who have gone to both Stony Brook and Binghamton have been telling me I shouldn't go there because I will be miserable.

I just saw that Stony Brook is over 70 ranks higher than Binghamton for their computer science department, but are the oppurtunities and classes significant enough for it to be a total, life-altering mistake to enroll in Binghamton instead?

You are relying way too much on rankings... Don't base your decision off of what others say about a school base it off on how you feel about it. I'm sure there are many miserable people at both schools, but there are also very pleased students at both. It depends on what you put into it.

Agreed with wdrmhbs.

aside from rankings and which school is more miserable, i always viewed bing being known more for business and stony being known more for sci. i only see it that way because that is one of their biggest majors within their schools

I have the exact same question. I want to major in chem and SBU would be much better for my major but everyone complains about it.
I've found that this is mainly because of the large commuter population and the overcrowding.
