Stony Brook,Buffalo or Manhattan College for Computer Engineering?

Hey Guys,I am an international student. I applied to couple of colleges in NY and so far have been accepted by Stony Brook University, University at Buffalo and Manhattan college.I want to major in Computer Engineering or Computer Science.Stony Brook and University at Buffalo accepted me directly to Computer Engineering and Manhattan College accepted me to their school of Engineering.Manhattan College also awarded me 16k merit scholarship. I am also hopeful I will get into RIT,NJIT,NYIT,Binghamton,Ithaca College But may not get any scholarship. I have also heard that Stony Brook’s CSE department is very good.So what should be my best bet in terms Education quality as I can not travel to US at this time and visit schools I would really appreciate any response

This is just my personal opinion. I did not attend any of these schools, I went to Drexel for comp sci 25 years ago.

I work (in technology - I don’t teach) at Ithaca College so you should come here. It’s beautiful, really, like a postcard. I’m not making that up. You’re going to get lots of personal attention - it’s a small program and it’ll be like a bunch of close friends taking classes together.

If I didn’t work at IC I would rate the schools like this for comp sci/comp eng.

RIT/NJIT tie for 1st choice based on your major - not sure what the campuses are like - NJIT is in Newark which is not great but if you are familiar with metropolitan living then you’ll be fine - very close to NYC so as an international student you won’t stand out one bit. RIT is going to have the worst or best winter depending on how much you like snow. It’s one of the snowiest places in the country.

Stony Brook/Binghamton tie for 2nd but Stony Brook has many commuters where Binghamton has more of a campus - Binghamton and Ithaca are going to have long winters - the first year may shock you a bit but that shouldn’t deter you from attending - just bring a coat and if it depresses you talk to people about it. you need to embrace the winter and not decide you won’t go outside until spring or else you’ll ruin much of your school year waiting on good weather that’ll show up right before you leave for the summer. on the positive side you’ll have lots of pictures of snow over your knees to send home. My daughters first choice of college next year is Binghamton for comp sci if she doesn’t get into an Ivy league school. She may end up at Ithaca - Binghamton is very selective.

Buffalo - you know there are two schools with almost the exact same name in Buffalo? one is big and one is small - if you go you should make sure you picked the big one if you are weighing it against these other campuses and schools. I think the big campus is more selective.

NYIT - have no idea

Thanks myowan for your detailed post. 1st of all I applied to Ithaca College and yesterday got my acceptance email, I also received a decent amount of scholarships from Ithaca but I am a bit skeptical of the quality of computer science major at Ithaca and is it competitive as the big tech schools. I would like to know from your experience about computer science at Ithaca College.
Secondly, I am from Bangladesh and it doesn’t snow here so I guess NY winters are going to be challenging for me regardless which school I attended. I probably won’t be attending RIT.
Thirdly, I applied to University at Buffalo (the big one) and got into computer engineering major. If I don’t get into Columbia or nyu poly I would be choosing from Stony brook, Ithaca and njit.
Lastly, could you please tell me whether is it good to study computer science in a liberal arts college or not?
Again thanks for your response.
