My son got accepted to stony brook in computer science and computer science in honors program at Drexel university for undergrad don’t know which choice is better .Stony brook university is known for the computer science but then he is getting honors program at Drexel university .
Congratulations to your son! They are both excellent schools with strong computer science programs! He will likely do well at either school. Is there a big difference in cost for your family? That might help you make the decision.
What kind of campus environment is preferable?
Stonybrook is located in an upper-middle class residential suburban town which according to dozens of alums I know doesn’t have much for college students to do and is known as a “suitcase school”*. It’s CS department ranking is #40 according to USNWR.
Drexel is located close to UPenn in urban Philly. Not known as a suitcase school and there’s a lot more to do around the area from my observation. CS department ranking here is #90 according to USNWR. However, they are known for their co-op program.
Strongly recommend campus visits to both on regular days/weekend during the semester and talk to current students to get a feel for both campuses.
- A school populated mostly by local/regional students who tend to go home every weekend which means campus life can seem dead on the college weekends.
Drexel is also a big co-op school. Does the idea of a co-op program appeal to your S or not?
And definitely cost should be factored in as well.
My son was offered scholarships and grants for Drexel, while Stony Brook is our state school, so cost isn’t an issue. The main factor is which school is academically better. He’s also considering transferring out after a year, but we know that’s a bit risky because he might lose some credits.
I would have him choose a school assuming he will stay there for 4 years.
Try to re-visit both perhaps during accepted students day.
I think that Stony Brook would have a bit of an edge in terms of academics, but if he feels Drexel is the better fit I’d go with that.
yes i also think visting the accepted student day is going to help .we feel that stony brook is a better option but then the honors program at Drexel catches the attention and that makes it harder to decide .
