Stony Brook or Purdue?

I’ve been accepted to both Stony Brook University and Purdue University and was wondering which college I should go to. I plan to major in computer science. I was accepted directly into the computer science major for Purdue, but for Stony Brook, I only got into the AOI in Pre-Computer Science. I really want to go to Stony, just cause it’s a lot cheaper with the in-state tuition and the presidential scholarship. But idk if it’s worth it because of the AOI. Please help.

Can you and your family afford the OOS tuition at Purdue?

What is the likelihood of getting into CS from AOI?

To me, those are the two most important questions before anyone can weigh in.

My family can afford the OOS tuition, but 4 years at Stony Brook would be cheaper than 1 year at Purdue. As for the likelihood of getting into CS from AOI, as long as I maintain a 3.2 GPA in two of the prerequisites courses, I should get in. I’m just worried that I’ll be behind everyone else if I go to Stony because I wasn’t directly admitted to the major.

That’s quite the difference in cost!

If you can for sure pursue CS if you maintain a 3.2, I would go for Stony. Don’t worry about not being a direct admit. There will be plenty of students in the same situation.

The only thing that would give me pause is if there was no guarantee to getting into CS after meeting the minimum GPA (which is the case at Purdue for students not accepted directly into the major).

Purdue is outstanding!

But so is SBU.

3 years of Perdue costs in the bank. Priceless.

IMHO, your decision comes down to geography and the type of people you want to be around, live with and possibly become. You’re looking at New York or mid-west. For me, the mid-west and chance to be a boilermaker would be a slam dunk. But that’s just me. Good luck!

Stony Brook

Stony Brook appears to enroll the somewhat academically stronger students of these schools. If this represents an environment you’d prefer, SBU could be a good choice.
