Stony Brook Transportation

this question is more for the students who already go to stony brook: i was looking at some reviews about stony brook and they said that there is a bus that takes them from the college to the mall on weekends, but do they also provide their services on weekdays or would i need to take a cab (how much would that even cost)? also, i LOVE the city and i wanted to know how long does it take to get there, the fastest way there, etc. any information would be helpful, thank you :)

There are 2 types of buses that run through SBU. There is SBU Transit and Suffolk County Transit (Public Transportation)

SBU Transit (free for students) takes around campus and on the weekends it goes to the mall. During the week you would have to take the Suffolk County bus which is $1.00 each way for students.

The fastest way to get to the city would be the LIRR (Long Island Rail Road) which is located directly on campus. A ride from SBU to Penn Station varies depending on which train you take. The shortest ride is 1 hour and 26 minutes while the longer ride is about 1 hour and 45 minutes and is $11.75-16.25 each way (depends on peek times or off peak times)

SBU Transit (funded by the Student Transportation Fee) provides bus services at no additional fee to campus students. Currently, the system has the Outer Loop, Inner Loop, Express, R&D, Hospital & Chapin, Railroad 1 & 2 bus routes that service the campus every day of the week. For the most part, every bus runs every 15 minutes on weekdays and every 30 minutes on weekends

Suffolk Transit buses provide cheap service to destinations outside the campus but run every 1-2 hours. I believe the 3D, S60, and S69 provide direct service to the mall on a daily basis. This buses take long to arrive and in my experience tend to unreliable (sometimes they are too delayed or early)

SBU transit provides additional service to the Mall on the “Mall Route”(Saturday) designated buses and also has buses on “Shopping Route” (Sunday) that go to Walmart, Target, and supermarkets around the area…

LIRR is on the northwest edge of campus and provides services to NYC to the west and Port Jefferson to the East. It takes on average 1 hour and 50 minutes to get to NYC and train departures are usually every 1-2 hours…
