My son was accepted to both and is having a hard time choosing. After scholarships Rochester is only $5k more.Does anyone have any recommendations?
thanks

Rochester of course!!!

If you can afford the 5k more, than URochester is a clear choice. Better campus life, better academics, better access to research, top-notch facilities, more opportunities overall. of course, once there, it’s up to your son to take advantage of this and not “waste” your money :)

Yes, if I could afford the extra $5,000 a year I would go to University of Rochester.

However, Stony Brook is also an excellent university - I would argue that you don’t necessarily have better access to research at Rochester, just different research, and Stony Brook also has top-notch facilities especially in the biomedical sciences. I do think that Rochester may offer you the more “traditional” stereotypical college experience, though.

Thank you all for your help.

I am a NYC mom. My daughter wouldn’t apply to Stony Brook because she has two different friends with siblings there who come home every other weekend to have their moms do their laundry. I tried to tell her that I was sure that plenty of students stay on campus during weekends, but SB does have a reputation as a commuter school.

If you can afford the price differential, then Rochester. Both are fine schools, but Rochester has a much richer campus life.

What did you decide and what was your decision process?
