Hi, I got accepted to SUNY Albany and am waiting for a reply from Stony Brook University. I intend on majoring in political science. I am stuck in between these two schools. Stony Brook is closer but its a science school. Albany is far away but the social life is better and its a better school for political science. Social life/Fun isn't my top priority but I wouldn't want to be trapped on a boring campus, I've already had a dreadful high school experience. I was hoping to get some advice on what school might be a better choice.

Have you visited Stony Brook and Albany? I’m not sure whether Albany has a better social life than Stony Brook. Make sure you visit both schools and get opinions from actual students.

Overall, Stony Brook is a better University (ranked better than UA in just about every major ranking) but I cannot say whether Political Science is a better choice at SB because I honestly don’t have much information about it. SB is widely known for its Natural Sciences and Engineering, Health fields, etc so you got that right.

I’m studying Computer Science here at Stony Brook set for graduation in May 2012 and I will tell you one thing: College is what you make out of it. I had a great time here at the Brook, love my Seawolves, and would never regret coming to SBU.

I have visited both schools and I’m really stuck in terms of choosing between the two. What do you do at Stony Brook when you are bored?

Had a time when I used to drink with friends almost every weekend… When I got tired of that I started going out to the parties that are smithtown, and in the sorroundings… When I got tired of that I would just head to the West Apartments. Got into some social clubs for a while and then realized it wasn’t me.

By Junior year i got a ‘high’ of school spirit and became and ill fanatic of the Seawolves and till’ this day me and my friends just head to about every Seawolves home basketball and football game. The good part about Seawolves athletic is that they are on the rise in just about every sport. We recently eliminated the Albany Great Danes in the NCAA Football Championship, also eliminated them from winning the conference tournament in soccer. Up to this point we already got two conference tournaments for the year with high expectations for Men’s basketball (so far first place in the league), Women’s Lacrosse, Men’s Lax and Women’s Cross Country

There is a lot of social and academic clubs you can join, but I’m not that type of person. Some even like to head to New York City and spend the nights partying it up and I also did that a few times but that gets tiring.

For a period of time I used to play intramural sports and that turned out fun and also would hang out and skateboard just about every night… lol…

For a time I even went to the swimming pool just to relax. Also the Staller Center has Indie Film showings every friday. All these things that many people don’t take advantage of and then blame the school for being bored.

I tried to have fun my own way with things me and my friends liked, and I’ve had a great time here. The only way you would get bored is if you stay in your room and not do anything.

There is a ton of campus events also, the Stony Brook Concert Series, the RockYoFaceCase series (underground music presentations) in the University Bar.

It takes a little bit of effort and creativity to have fun while taking studying breaks. Is not as bad as you think. Everyone has their own things that they consider fun, there is plenty of options… You look for the ones that are appealing to you
